  • The All India Cine Workers Association today announced a total ban on Pakistani actors and artists working in Indian film industry following the Pulwama attack.
    • It added if any organisation still insists on working with Pakistani artists, it'll be banned and a strong action will be taken against it.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation of Bihar's 1st metro in Patna
    • The Patna Metro Rail Project will be built at an estimate of over ₹13,300 crore and will be completed in five years. 
    • The metro rail, which will provide an alternate mode of conveyance to around 26.23 lakh people, will have two corridors.
Science & Technology
  • China is planning to build its 1st space-based solar power station.
    • Orbiting 36,000 kilometres above ground, this station capture solar energy in orbit and beam it to the Earth.
    • The beams would be converted into power through ground station.

  • President of Argentina Mauricio Macri arrived in New Delhi today on a 3-day official visit to India.
    • During this visit, he will hold delegation level talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
      • The two sides will review progress in bilateral ties and explore new avenues of cooperation. 
      • Several agreements will be signed after the talks.
  • External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has met her Bulgarian counterpart Ekaterina Zaharieva in the capital Sofia.
    • The two leaders discussed a range of bilateral issues related to the economy, agriculture, health, tourism and culture. 
    • Important Points to Note :
      • Mrs. Swaraj is on a two-day visit to Bulgaria. 
      • This is the 1st ever visit by an Indian External Affairs Minister to the Balkan nation.
  • Schools in France are set to replace the words 'Mother' and 'Father' with 'Parent 1' and 'Parent 2' on the administrative forms under an amendment to a law passed earlier this week. 
    • The move is aimed at ending discrimination against same-sex parents.

  • External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj embarked on a 4-day visit to Bulgaria, Morocco and Spain today morning. 
    • Bulgaria Visit :
      • Mrs Swaraj will visit to Bulgaria on the 1st leg of the tour where she will meet with the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of the country.
      • The two leaders will discuss bilateral, regional and global issues of mutual interest.
    • Morocco Visit :
      • She will interact with her counterpart Nasser Bourita
      • She will also call on King Mohammed VI, King of Morocco, Saad Dine El Otmani, Head of Government, and Habib El Malki, President of the Chamber of Representatives.
      • The visit will provide an opportunity to hold in-depth discussions on various issues. 
      • Several MoUs are also expected to be signed during the visit.
    • Spain Visit :
      • She will hold a bilateral meeting with her counterpart Josep Borrell Fontelles to discuss bilateral, regional and global issues of mutual concern.
      • Note : The Spanish government will also confer upon Mrs Swaraj the Grand Cross of the Order of Civil Merit for India's swift response through Operation Maitri in rescuing 71 Spanish nationals from Nepal in 2015 in the wake of the disastrous earthquake.

  • At least 44 CRPF jawans were martyred in a suicide attack by terrorists at Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama. .
    • A terrorist named Adil Ahmad Dar from Pulwama, targeted two vehicles of the 70-vehicle CRPF convoy carrying 2,500 personnel and hit one bus with his car carrying 350 kg IED explosives. 
    • This attack was claimed by Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM).
    • Following this attack, India has withdrawn the MFN (Most Favoured Nation) status that it had granted to Pakistan
      • India had granted the status to Pakistan in 1996, a year after WTO's formation.
      • What is MFN ?
        • In international economic relations and international politics, Most Favoured Nation (MFN) is a status or level of treatment accorded by one state to another in international trade. 
        • MFN means the country which is the recipient of this treatment must nominally receive equal trade advantages as the "most favoured nation" by the country granting such treatment.

    • The day is observed every year on the 13 of February to celebrate radio as a forum for entertainment and information, as a bridge of communication for remote communities and its role in empowering people.
    • This day marks the first broadcast by UN radio in 1946.
    • It was proclaimed on 3 November 2011 by UNESCO's 36th General Conference.
    • It was originally proposed by the Kingdom of Spain.
    • First world radio day was observed in the year 2012.
    • Theme of World Radio Day 2019 : “Dialogue, Tolerance and Peace”.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Korea on 21-22 of this month. 
    • During the visit, he will be conferred with the 2018 Seoul Peace Prize at a ceremony. 
    • The visit will provide an important occasion for the two countries to review the recent developments in bilateral relations. 
    • The two sides will exchange views on regional and international issues of common interest with the objective of further strengthening the Special Strategic Partnership.
  • Macedonia officially changed its name to the Republic of North Macedonia
    • Note : The name change clears the way for the country to join military alliance NATO.
  • Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is planning to change the country's name to 'Maharlika'. 
    • The name change would require a new law and the public's approval in a referendum.
    • Note : 'Philippines' was named after Spanish King Philip II.
  • Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman will make his 1st state visit to India on February 19-20.
    • He'll be accompanied by a high-level delegation, including ministers, senior officials and Saudi businessmen. 
    • The Crown Prince will meet President Ram Nath Kovind and Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, and hold bilateral talks with PM Narendra Modi.

Meet the new Election Commissioner of India - Sushil Chandra

1980 batch Indian Revenue Service Officer Sushil Chandra, has been appointed as the new Election Commissioner of India (ECI).  The development comes months before the country goes to polls. Election Commissioners are appointed for a term of six years, or till the age of 65 - whichever is earlier.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) graduate is currently working as the Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).

Important Point to Note : With his appointment, the Election Commission now has Sunil Arora as the Chief Election Commissioner (took charge on 2nd December 2018) and Ashok Lavasa (appointed in January 2018) and Sushil Chandra as fellow commissioners.

Honoring the best National and Foreign Films of the year 2018, the 72nd British Academy Film Awards, more commonly known as the BAFTAs, were recently held at the Royal Albert Hall (London). English actress Joanna Lumley hosted the ceremony for the second consecutive year.Alfonso Cuaron's "Roma" won the Best Film Award. It also won awards in best director and cinematography categories. The Special Award for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema was given to Elizabeth Karlsen and Stephen Woolley and the Fellowship honor was presented to editor Thelma Schoonmaker.
