International Current Affairs
  • Indian Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar today left for a two-day visit to Bangladesh
    • During his visit, Parrikar is scheduled to meet Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina, who also holds the defence portfolio, ahead of her visit to India next month.
    • He would also meet President Abdul Hamid and other top leadership.
    • Important Point to Note : This is the first ever visit of an Indian Defense Minister to Bangladesh.
  • Nepal's government has proposed amending its Constitution to create a new state to meet the demands of the Indian-origin Madhesi community
    • This comes after protests across the country for a bigger federal state last year left over 50 dead. 
  • Nearly 20 countries, including France and the UK, will attend a New York event celebrating the Diwali postage stamp recently issued by the United States. 
    • The event, co-hosted by the Permanent Missions of Belarus and India to the United Nations, will be held on December 5. 
    • Note : It will also honour Ranju Batra, the chairman of the Diwali Stamp Project.
  • Thailand's Parliament has invited Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, who will be formally known as King Rama X or the 10th king of Chakri dynasty, after the recent death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
  • India is going to host the 6th Heart of Asia Conference.
    • This conference will take place in Amritsar, Punjab during 3rd and 4th December 2016.
  • INS Darshak has completed Hydrographic Survey for Tanzania.
    • The survey was undertaken under the MoU signed for Foreign Cooperation in the field of Hydrography between Tanzania and India on exchange of hydrographic data to promote development and cooperation through conducting surveys, exchange of data, capacity building and infrastructure strengthening.

  • The National Anthem should be compulsorily played at all cinema halls across the nation before movie screenings, the Supreme Court ordered today.
    • It should also be accompanied by the National flag onscreen and any abridged version of the Anthem would not be permitted. 
    • Everyone present in the halls must rise and pay respect to the National Anthem, the court added.
  • According new data from Civil Registration System ( CRS) released by the Office of the Registrar General of India, Sex Ratio at Birth (SRB) continues to worsen in India
    • The SRB has declined to 887 in 2014 from 898 in 2013. 
    • The ratio has been declining since 2011 when the figure was 909.

  • The Cuban government has declared 9 days of public mourning following the death of Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro
    • His funeral will be held at the Santa Ifigenia cemetery in Santiago de Cuba on December 4.
    • Note : Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh will lead the Indian delegation at the funeral. 
  • Iraq's parliament approved a law to transform Popular Mobilisation forces, a coalition of Iran-backed Shi'ite militias, into a legal and separate military corps. 
    • This comes while the Iraqi army is trying to recapture the Islamic State stronghold in Mosul.
  • The leaders of 14 European countries led by Germany have issued a statement calling for reopening of arms control talks with Russia, over concerns of an 'unstable' Europe.
    • This comes after Donald Trump won the US presidency, with reports suggesting European countries are taking a new and less assertive approach towards Russia.
  • Former Prime Minister Francois Fillon has won France's Conservative Presidential primary.
    • This will position him as the leading mainstream candidate to take on National Front leader Marine Le Pen in the presidential election this spring.

  • Finland today announced a new energy and climate strategy.
    • Under which the government will consider banning the use of coal as an energy source by 2030. 
    • The use of coal in Finland has been steadily declining since 2011, with investment increasing in renewable energy sector in 2012. 
    • Note : Energy prices in Scandinavian countries have been dropping since 2010.

  • India observes its 'Constitution Day' today.
    • Aim : To spread the importance of the Indian Constitution and to remember the architect of constitution Dr. B. R. Ambedkar.
    • It was on this day in 1949 that the Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution. 
    • The Constitution, however, came into force on January 26, 1950, which is celebrated as the country's Republic Day
    • The government had last year decided to celebrate the day to honour our Constitution and its promulgation.
  • Today is 67th National Law Day.
  • Today is National Milk Day.
    • We observe this day to mark 95th birth anniversary of Dr.Verghese Kurien.
    • Kurien is fondly known as the Father of White Revolution in India.
    • He is the founder of dairy firm Amul.
    • Important Note : India is the world's largest milk producing country, with 16 percent of total global production, followed by America, China, Pakistan and Brazil.
  • 8th anniversary of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks observed today.
    • On this day in 2008, ten Pakistani terrorists had arrived by sea route and opened fire indiscriminately at people killing 166, including 18 security personnel, and injuring several others, besides damaging property worth crores of rupees. 
    • The attack had begun on 26 November and lasted until 29 November.
    • The then Maharashtra ATS Chief Hemant Karkare, army Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, Mumbai's Additional Police Commissioner Ashok Kamte and Senior Police Inspector Vijay Salaskar were among those killed.
    • Ajmal Kasab was the only terrorist who was captured alive
    • He was hanged four years later on November 21, 2012.

  • Rajasthan government has decided to launch 'Annapurna Rasoi Programme', a project to provide quality meals at cheap prices to people belonging to the weaker sections of the society. 
    • Under this scheme, labourers, rickshaw pullers, auto drivers, students and working women among others will be provided breakfast at ₹5 per plate and lunch and dinner at ₹8 per plate.

  • Thailand today halved its visa on arrival fees, to 1000 baht (around ₹1900), for tourists from India and 18 other countries. 
    • The move, intended to boost tourist arrivals, comes less than two months after Thailand increased its visa fees to 2000 baht. 
    • Thailand also extended its long-stay visa, for foreigners aged above 50, from one to ten years.
  • Boudhanath Stupa, a UNESCO heritage site in Kathmandu that was severely damaged in the 2015 Nepal earthquake, reopened to the public today after its reconstruction was completed. 
    • Nepal PM Pushpa Kamal Dahal thanked India and China for extending financial support for the reconstruction. 
    • Note : Boudhanath, Nepal's largest stupa, is considered the holiest Tibetan Buddhist temple outside Tibet.

    • Note : As a member nation, CERN requires India to make an annual contribution of approx ₹77 crore.
  • India was placed at the 20th rank among the 58 countries on the 2017 Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI)
    • The index was released by Germanwatch, an independent German NGO and Climate Action Network Europe.

      • First three spots in the list of 2017 CCPI rankings were left vacant. 
      • France was placed at 4th place, thus leads list for the first time. It was followed by Sweden (5th) and UK (6th).

    • The United Nations has designated this day, recognising that television plays a major role in presenting different issues that affect people
    • It seeks to celebrate the philosophy of television, a tool which represents a symbol for communication and globalisation in the contemporary world. 
    • 21st of November has been chosen for this day because on November 21-22, 1996 the UN held the first World Television Forum.
  • US President Barack Obama has ruled out drilling for oil and gas in the Arctic Ocean to save the "fragile and unique" Arctic ecosystem from "significant risks". 
    • This comes after US President-elect Donald Trump vowed to "lift the Obama-Clinton roadblocks" against large fossil fuel projects. 
    • The ban will be in effect from 2017 to 2022.

  • The US, Canada, Germany and Mexico unveiled their long-term plans to switch from polluting to clean energy sources at the UN climate talks this week. 
    • Germany displayed sector-by-sector scenarios pledging to remove up to 95% of its CO2 emissions, while the three North American countries jointly released their blueprints on Wednesday to drastically reduce carbon emissions by 2050.
  • The upper house of the Bhutan parliament has decided against ratifying the road connectivity plan involving Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, and Nepal (BBIN). 
    • The BBIN agreement was earlier signed in Bhutan’s capital Thimphu in July and will become operational only when all the four countries ratify it. 
    • Note : India, Bangladesh, and Nepal have already ratified the pact.
  • Russia and Iran are in talks over a $10 billion (around ₹67,704 crore) arms deal that includes T-90 tanks, Artillery Systems, Planes, and Helicopters.
    • Important Points to Note
      • The military hardware will be delivered to Iran only with consent of the UN Security Council.
      • Earlier, Russia had delivered the S-300 missile defence system to Iran.
  • Thailand recently celebrated the festival of lights called Loi Krathong, which is celebrated to pay homage to Lord Buddha. 
    • The main events include releasing sky lanterns and floating krathongs, meaning decorated baskets. 
    • This year, restrictions on the festivities were observed as the country mourns the death of King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

  • Today is 289th foundation day of Jaipur.
  • The first cherry blossom festival in India was held this week in Shillong, with Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma inaugurating the event.
  • The government has more than doubled the compensation for widows and families of soldiers killed while fighting for the country.
    • The kin of the soldiers dying at the LoC would get ₹35 lakh as compensation, as compared to ₹15 lakh earlier.

  • The 2016 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum’s Leaders Summit will be held in Lima, Peru from November 19 to 20, 2016.

    • Official logo : The architecture of the ancient city of Caral. It will be the second time Peru hosting to the APEC Summit, previously it had hosted the event in 2008.   • Israeli President Reuven Rivlin, who is scheduled to arrive in India on 15th November 2016, will attend a ceremony commemorating the victims of the 26/11 terrorist attack in the Taj Hotel, Mumbai. 
    • Important Note : Rivlin's state visit to India would mark the first by any Israeli President since 1996.
