  • The government launched the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, effective from July 1, 2017. In the making since 2000 and claimed to be the biggest tax reform since Independence, the GST will be a unified indirect tax structure across the country. The GST Council has come out with a four-rate structure of 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%.
  • "Hywind", the world’s first full—scale floating wind farm is being built off the coast of Scotland in the North Sea.
  • "Maitree 2017" a 14 day joint military training exercise between Indian Army and Royal Thailand Army commenced at Bakloh in Chamba district in Himachal Pradesh.

  • Russian Navy today paraded about 50 ships and submarines and over 40 planes and helicopters of the naval aviation in the city of St Petersburg to mark the 321st anniversary of the country's Navy.  
  • The Chinese Army today displayed more than 600 pieces of military hardware, nearly half of which were displayed for the first time in public, in a parade to mark its 90th founding anniversary.
  • The world's longest hanging pedestrian bridge, Europabrücke opened today near the Swiss town of Zermatt
    • The bridge, which is 494 metres high, hangs 85 metres above the Grabengufer ravine. 
National Current Affairs
  • The government is going to launch a crackdown on corrupt officials from August 15. 
    • Letters have been dispatched to various departments and paramilitary forces to finalise the list of corrupt officials by August 5. 
    • The list will be sent to Central Bureau of Investigation and Central Vigilance Commission who will keep a close watch and recommend necessary actions.

    • Deputy CM Sushil Modi was given the Finance, Commerce, Forestry, and IT Department

  • On the occasion of its foundation day, the Union Ministry of Earth Science has launched a mobile application titled 'India Quake'. 
    • This app has been developed by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) for automatic dissemination of earthquake parameter (location, time and magnitude) after the occurrence of earthquakes

  • Today (29th July) is International Tiger Day.
    • This day is  an annual celebration to promote a system for protecting natural habitats of tigers and to raise public awareness for tiger conservation. 
    • This day was first observed in 2010 at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit. 
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law ratifying a deal with the Syrian government allowing Russia to keep its air base in Syria for almost 50 years
  • The 2017 BRICS Labour and Employment Ministers’ meeting was recently held at Chongqing (China). 
    • This meeting comes ahead of 2017 BRICS Summit to be held in Xiamen, China in September 2017.
    • The BRICS countries have agreed to work together to ensure stable employment and better quality of life for their people.

  • Maharashtra government today announced that integrated coaching will not be allowed in the state from the next academic year
    • It will be compulsory to attend college lectures and attendance will be marked through bio-metric system. 
    • Note : Integrated coaching is an arrangement between colleges and coaching centres, in which students don't need to attend college lectures.

  • China and Russia held their First Joint Naval Drill in the Baltic Sea.
    • This exercise involves anti-aircraft and anti-ship defence measures coordinated from the Baltiysk base in Russia's Kaliningrad enclave. 
  • Zimbabwe's Parliament today passed a bill giving President Robert Mugabe power to appoint the country's top judges without consulting anyone
    • Note : The bill is the first amendment to the Constitution since it was adopted by a referendum in 2013.

  • Today is the Death Anniversary of 11th President of India, Bharat Ratna Dr Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam (A. P. J. Abdul Kalam)
    • He is known as the 'Missile Man of India' for his work on the development of ballistic missile.
    • He passed away on 27th July 2015, while delivering a lecture at IIM Shillong. 
    • PM Narendra Modi inaugurated a Memorial built in Kalam's honour at Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu.
      • This memorial has been designed and built by DRDO and has a replica of Agni missile installed at the site. 
      • This memorial's main entrance resembles India Gate, the dome structure is similar to Rashtrapati Bhavan's.

  • The US House of Representatives today voted 419-3 to approve new sanctions on Russia for its interference in the 2016 presidential elections, despite President Donald Trump objecting to the legislation. 
    • The bill would also levy new sanctions against North Korea and Iran over the nations' ballistic missile programs. 
  • To cut down the distance to the China border through Tawang by 10 km, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is going to construct 2 tunnels through Arunachal Pradesh's Sela Pass
  • National Security Advisor Ajit Doval is going to visit China tomorrow to attend BRICS meeting in Beijing.
National Current Affairs
  • Nation pays tribute to martyrs on 18th Kargil Victory Day (Kargil Vijay Diwas) today.
    • Kargil Vijay Diwas is named after the success of Operation Vijay.
    • This day is is celebrated on 26 July every year in honour of the Kargil War's Heroes
    • On this day, 26 July 1999, India successfully took command of the high outposts which had been lost to Pakistani intruders. 
    • The Kargil war was fought for more than 60 days, ended on 26 July 1999.  
    • Kargil was India's first televised war that enabled people across the country to see what was happening on the battlefield.

  • Sweden is going to hold its 'first and biggest' military exercise in over 20 years, involving all of its military branches as well as troops from several NATO countries. 
    • The drills are aimed at strengthening Sweden's defence capabilities and creating a "credible and visible" deterrent to warn potential enemies against the risks of attacking Sweden.
  • Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain and Egypt today blacklisted 9 charity groups and 9  individuals with ties to Yemen, Qatar and Libya, labelling them "terrorist" over suspected ties to Islamist extremism. 
    • This comes amid the ongoing Qatar crisis in which the Arab states suspended diplomatic ties with Qatar last month, accusing it of supporting terrorism.
New Appointments
  • Ram Nath Kovind was today sworn-in as India's 14th President.
    • He was administered the oath of the office by the Chief Justice of India JS Khehar. 
    • Kovind, who defeated Opposition candidate Meira Kumar after securing over 65% votes, is India's second Dalit President after KR Narayanan.

  • The Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi today launched an online portal SHe-box (Sexual Harassment e-box) for the central government's women employees to file complaints related to workplace sexual harassment. 
    • She said the portal would soon cater to women of private companies as well. 
  • Uttar Pradesh Power Minister Shrikant Sharma today launched free power connection schemes for BPL families at 624 places across the state. 
  • The Maharashtra government has lifted the ban on the sale of paan masala until a single-member committee decides on the matter. 
    • Note : Maharashtra had banned paan masala in 2014.
  • According to a National Commission for Protection of Child Rights' report, Maharashtra and Rajasthan recorded the highest number of cases of child marriage
  • The Lucknow Metro will become India's first to have its own FM radio station, which will provide entertainment and information on metro safety.

  • A US state department has recently revealed that India in 2016 replaced Pakistan as the world's third largest terror target after Iraq and Afghanistan
    • It added that out of the 11,072 terror attacks across the world in 2016, 927 took place in India. 
  • For the first time India is going to host Global Conference on Cyber Space (GCCS) 2017, the world’s largest conference on cyber space and related issues in New Delhi in November 2017. 
    • This is the 5th edition of the conference. 
    • This is for the first time GCCS is taking place outside Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) nations.  
    • Theme of GCCS 2017 : ‘Cyber4All : An Inclusive, Sustainable, Developmental, Safe and Secure Cyberspace'.

  • Today (23rd July) is National Broadcasting Day‬.
    • On this day in 1927, India got its first radio station.
    • Note : The first station of the Indian Broadcasting Company (IBC) was inaugurated at Bombay by the British Viceroy of India Lord Irwin on 23rd July 1927.

  • Nation remembered freedom fighters Chandra Shekhar Azad and Lokmanya Tilak, on their birth anniversaries today.
    • Indian nationalist leader Bal Gangadhar Tilak's 160th birth anniversary
      • Popularly called 'Lokmanya', meaning 'accepted by the people', Tilak was born onJuly 23, 1856 in Maharashtra. 
      • The pioneer of the Swadeshi Movement, he is also widely known for his quote 'Swaraj is my birthright and I shall have it'.
    • Indian revolutionary Chandra Shekhar Azad, popularly known as 'Azad', was born on this day (23rd July) in the year 1906.
      • He fought for the Indian independence struggle till the age of 24 years, before shooting himself to keep his pledge of never being caught alive.

  • The United States today announced that the government will ban citizens from traveling to North Korea due to "the serious risk of arrest".
  • Insurance giant Swiss Re is preparing an insurance policy for the Mesoamerican Reef in Mexico to prevent its further deterioration.
    • Under the scheme, which is the first for a natural structure, the premiums will be paid by
      hotels and government, and money to pay for the repair of the reef will be released if a storm strikes.
  • The US Defence Department today announced that it will not make military reimbursements to Pakistan for 2016 fiscal. 
    • This comes after US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis said that Pakistan had not taken sufficient action against the Afghan insurgent group Haqqani Network. 
    • Note : Earlier, the US Senate had voted to impose tougher conditions on defense aid to Pakistan.

  • The landmark India-Japan civil nuclear agreement came into effect from today. 
    • This deal would enable Japan to export nuclear power plant technology as well as provide finance for nuclear power plants in India. 
    • It will also assist India in nuclear waste management and could undertake joint manufacture of nuclear power plant components under the Make in India initiative.
  • The report by the Joint UN Programme on HIV/AIDS, UNAIDS, 'Ending AIDS: Progress towards the 90-90-90 targets', today revealed that India, China and Pakistan are among the 10 countries that accounted for more than 95 per cent of all new HIV infections in the Asia and the Pacific region in 2016.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has visited a total of 49 countries in the last three years.
    • Modi's foreign trips as PM started with his visit to Bhutan in June 2014. 
    • Further, he has visited the USA five times in the last three years.
  • The Gujarat government has decided to celebrate the 'World Heritage City' status granted to Ahmedabad by UNESCO for a fortnight (a period of two weeks). 
    • The programme, starting on August 1, will include heritage walks, cultural events, lectures and seminars about the 600-year-old city. 
  • Nagaland Chief Minister TR Zeliang won the vote of confidence in the state assembly today, garnering the support of 47 out of 59 MLAs.
    • Note : Zeliang was re-appointed the CM after former CM Shurhozelie Liezietsu was sacked for not appearing for the floor test.

  • Uruguay has become the 1st country in the world to allow the sale of marijuana for recreational use
    • The move comes four years after a law was passed under which cannabis trade was fully legalised. 
  • The United States has ended a four-month ban on flyers carrying laptops on US-bound flights from airports in North Africa and the Middle East
    • Note : The UK continues to enforce a similar electronics ban on flights from several Middle Eastern airports.

  • NDA's presidential candidate and former Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind was today elected as the 14th President of India
    National Current Affairs
    • The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDA) has launched 'mAadhaar', a new app for syncing Aadhaar data on mobile phones. 
      • This app allows users to carry their Aadhaar information including name, date of birth, gender, address, and the linked photograph, on their smartphones. 
      • This app also allows users to lock or unlock biometrics data.

    • The Bank of England today unveiled a new polymer £10 note featuring 19th century novelist Jane Austen, in a move to replace paper £5, £10 and £20 with secure plastic notes. 
      • This makes Austen the only woman other than Queen Elizabeth to be featured on a polymer British banknote. 
      • Note : This note's introduction marks the 200th anniversary of Austen's death.
    International Current Affairs
    • India, US, and Japan have concluded the 'Malabar 2017' international naval exercise in the Bay of Bengal. 
      • As many as 16 ships, 95 aircraft, and two submarines from the three countries took part in the 21st edition of the annual exercise. 
      • The drill was aimed at increasing interoperability among the three countries' navies to counter shared maritime threats.

      • Important Points to Note :
        • Mandela was awarded India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna in 1990 for his role in the anti-apartheid movement. 
        • Apart from Pakistan national Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, he is the only non-Indian to have received the award. 
        • He was honored with the Nobel Peace Prize in the year 1993.

      • The software will make use of SMS services, which will allow commuters without smart phones to book tickets.

    • UK PM Theresa May today published the landmark 'Brexit repeal bill' to end the supremacy of EU laws and the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice in the UK. 
      • The repeal bill is a largely technical measure to copy all existing EU legislation into domestic UK law to ensure a smooth transition after Brexit.
    • India has contributed an additional $1 million to India-UN Development Partnership Fund launched to support sustainable development projects across the developing world. 
      • Earlier, India had made an initial contribution of $1 million when the fund was created. 
      • The amount was allocated for the implementation of a project benefiting seven Small Island Developing States in South Pacific Ocean.

    • The Roman Catholic Mediterranean island Malta today became the 24th country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage.
    • Ships carrying Chinese troops are headed to Djibouti to set up China's first overseas military base in an effort to enhance its global reach. 
      • The base will be used for peacekeeping and humanitarian aid in Africa and West Asia, China said.
      •  However, India believes the base would become another of China's "string of pearls" of military alliances and assets.
    • Public schools in Saudi Arabia will start offering physical education for girls from the next academic year, in the government's latest reform to open opportunities for women. 
      • Note : Physical education for women is controversial in Saudi Arabia where conservatives consider it immodest.

    • Delhi Police will be the first state police to get 'super cop' belts which are widely used by the police in the UK, USA, and Russia. 
      • The belt will help the cops carry wireless sets, pistols, and cartridges easily.
