International Affairs
  • Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar meets his Pakistani counterpart Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhury in Islamabad today.
    • Mr. Jaishankar, who is on a visit to SAARC capitals (SAARC Yaatra), also called on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, and his foreign affairs advisors Sartaj Aziz and Tariq Fatemi during the day.
    • He has already visited Thimphu and Dhaka, and would fly to Kabul on Wednesday.
  • External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has met her Luxembourg counterpart Jean Asselborn and urged for enhancing bilateral investment.
    • The Luxembourg minister affirmed his country's support for India as permanent member in a reformed UN Security Council during the foreign ministers meeting.
National Affairs
  • The world's largest and tallest Indian tricolour was unfurled at Town Park in Faridabad today.
    • The flag weighs 48 kilograms and has a 96 feet by 64 feet dimension.
    • It was hoisted at a height of 250 feet (75 meters), making it the largest and the highest hoisted Indian flag in the world.
  • The bill banning cow slaughter in Maharashtra, pending for several years, today received the President's assent.
    • This measure has taken almost twenty years to materialize and was initiated during the previous Sena-BJP government.
    • Under the new law, anyone selling beef or in possession of it can be jailed for up to five years and fined Rs.10,000.
  • Uttarakhand Government has decided to take at least 25,000 elderly people of the State on Char Dham Yatra for free under the scheme 'Mere Bujurg Mere Teerth'.
    • The scheme "Mere Bujurg Mere Teerth‬' was launched last year for the people above 65 years of age in the state.
    • The scheme is to take the elders on a free pilgrimage to any of the four famous Himalayan shrines.
  • The Election Commission of India has launched National Electoral Roll Purification and Authentication Programme (NERPAP) throughout the country from today with the prime objective of bringing a totally error free and authenticated electoral roll.
    • During the programme, EPIC data of electors will be linked with Aadhar data of UIDAI for the purpose of authentication. 
    • NERPAP will focus on improving image quality of electors along with sorting issues like corrections of errors etc.
  • A Bill seeking to pave the way for plying of e-rickshaws on Delhi roads was passed by the Lok Sabha today.
    • It is the third ordinance to be replaced by a bill passed by the Lower House since Monday, the others being the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill and the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill.

  • Mukesh Ambani has retained his position as the richest Indian for the eighth year in a row with a networth of USD 21 billion followed by Dilip Shanghvi and Azim Premji.
  • Savitri Jindal (O.P. Jindal group) is the richest woman of India followed by Indu Jain (Bennett Coleman & Co) and  Anu Aga (Thermax).

  • Centre and RBI sign an agreement to keep inflation below six percent and provide price stability with growth.
    • According to this aggrement, the RBI would tailor its monetary policy to achieve an inflation rate of 4% with a flexibility band of +/- 2% for the financial year 2016-17 and thereafter.
    • “The RBI will aim to bring inflation below 6% by January 2016,” the government said.
    • This is biggest change to monetary policy since opening up of India’s economy more than two decades ago

    • Hashim Amla becomes the fastest player to reach twenty ODI centuries.
  • Olympic medallist boxer MC Mary Kom (32) has announced that she has decided to quit boxing after the 2016 Rio Olympic Games as her body would not be able to cope with the rigours of the sport any further.
