National Current Affairs
  • A total of 2,958 new confirmed cases of novel corona virus have been reported in India during the last 24 hours taking the total number of cases to 49,391.
    • 14,183 patients have been cured so far and the recovery rate reached 28.71 percent
    • During the last 24 hours, 126 deaths have been reported taking the nationwide toll to 1694.
  • Union Government has started Aarogya Setu IVRS services to cater to people having feature phone or landline. 
    • Available across India, Arogya sethu is a toll-free service, where citizens are asked to give a missed call to the number 1921 and they will get a call back requesting for inputs regarding their health. 
    • Based on the responses given, citizens will also get an SMS indicating their health status.
    • This Mobile App is developed by the Ministry of Electronics and IT. 
    • Aim : To enable people to assess themselves the risk of their catching the Corona Virus infection.
  • Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan today relaunched the Sambal Yojana
    • Under this, the state government will bear the education expenses of children from poor families from Class 1 to PhD. 
  • The syllabus for the upcoming academic session of schools will be reduced, Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank announced today.
    • The decision has been taken considering the pressure on students and the loss of important academic time.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • India's services activity plunged to lowest on record in April with Nikkei/IHS Markit Services Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) falling to 5.4 from March's 49.3. 
    • The index stayed below 50-level which separates growth from contraction.
  • WhatsApp Pay will launch in India by May-end.
    • It will be launched initially in partnership with three private banks, namely Axis Bank, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank in the first phase. 
Science & Technology
  • The International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) has launched a WhatsApp chatbot to combat COVID-19 misinformation. 
    • The bot will help users gain access to data collected by 80 fact-checking networks in 74 countries.
    • They have compiled over 4,800 fact-checks in 43 languages, IFCN said. 
    • Users can save +1 (727) 2912606 as a contact number and text "hi" to launch the chatbot.
  • As part of it's manned space program, China today successfully launched its largest carrier rocket, Long March-5B, at the Wenchang Space Launch Center in the southern island province of Hainan. 
    • The rocket was carrying China's new-generation spaceship without a crew and a cargo return capsule for test into space.
Deaths
  • Most wanted Kashmiri terrorist and top Hizbul Mujahideen commander Riyaz Naikoo, who carried a reward of ₹12 lakh on his head, was killed today in an encounter with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Awantipora. 
Awards & Honors
  • Russia has awarded North Korean leader Kim Jong-un a commemorative medal marking the 75th anniversary of Russia's victory in World War II
    • Kim has been awarded the medal for his role in preserving the memory of Soviet soldiers killed in North Korea during WWII.
New Appointments
  • The government has appointed Economic Affairs Secretary Tarun Bajaj as a Director on the central board of Reserve Bank of India (RBI)
    • Bajaj replaces Atanu Chakraborty, who retired on April 30.
