International Current Affairs
  • Today (4th May 2020) is International Firefighters' Day.
    • It was instituted after proposal emailed out across the world on January 4, 1999 due to the deaths of five firefighters in tragic circumstances in a wildfire in Australia. 
    • May 4 used to be a traditional Firefighters' Day in many European countries, because it is the day of Saint Florian, patron saint of firefighters.
  • Italy today eased the nationwide lockdown imposed due to COVID-19 pandemic after 56 days
    • As part of the government's gradual easing of the lockdown, factories are allowed to open, restaurants and bars can only offer take-aways but most shops must stay shut till May 18. 
    • Public parks are allowed to reopen and relatives can once again meet up.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has participated in a virtual summit of the Non Aligned Movement (NAM) today on COVID 19 pandemic. 
    • The Summit  has been organised at the initiative of Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev to enhance coordination of member states in fight against COVID-19. 
    • Important Note : This is the 1st NAM meeting that Mr Modi is taking part  since becoming Prime Minister in 2014.
    • About NAM 
      • The NAM is a forum of 120 developing world states that are not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc. 
      • This is the largest grouping of states worldwide after the UN (United Nations).

National Current Affairs
  • A total of 2,553 fresh confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been reported in India in the last 24 hours taking the total number to  42,836
    • Out of them, 11, 706 patients have recovered so far  and 1,074 patients getting well in last 24 hours, which is the highest number of patients recovered  in just one day.
    • The  recovery rate of patients from COVID-19 infection has gone up to 27.52 per cent.
  • A new public-private initiative called 'Aarogya Setu Mitr' has been launched on the government's Aarogya Setu app. 
    • Clicking this section redirects users to an external website, where they can get free online COVID-19-related consultations with doctors, and book doorstep sample collection for lab tests by any of the listed entities. 
    • Users can also order medicines online from the listed platforms.
  • The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) today announced that Civil Services prelim exam, scheduled to be held on May 31, has been deferred. 
    • Taking notice of the extension of restrictions, the Commission decided that it will not be possible to resume examinations and interviews for the present, UPSC said. 
    • The situation will be reviewed again on May 20, it added.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) today announced that over 99 per cent of CKP Co-Op Bank's 1.32 lakh depositors will get full money through Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC).
    • Note : Yesterday, the RBI has cancelled the licence of CKP Co-operative Bank Ltd.
  • India's manufacturing activity fell to a record low in April, as many businesses temporarily closed during the lockdown. 
    • The IHS Markit India Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) fell to 27.4 from 51.8 in March, marking the sharpest deterioration since readings began 15 years ago.
    • After nearly three years, it slipped below the 50-mark threshold that separates growth from contraction.
  • Union Minister of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Narendra Singh Tomar launched “The Saras Collection” on the Government e Marketplace (GeM) portal  in New Delhi today. 
    • The Saras Collection showcases daily utility products made by rural self-help groups (SHGs) and aims to provide SHGs in rural areas with market access to Central and State Government buyers. 
    • It is a unique initiative of GeM and the Deen Dayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM).
  • Dubai has announced a new date for the mega Expo event from 1st Oct 2021 to 31st March 2022. 
    • This was after  two-thirds majority of Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) Member States voted in favour of postponing the next World Expo by one year.
Science & Technology
  • To fight Covid 19 pandemic, the Laser Science & Technology Centre (LASTEC), one of the cluster laboratories of DRDO with the help of M/s New Age Instruments and Materials Private Limited, Gurugram, has developed an equipment titled UV Blaster
    • This is an Ultra Violet (UV) Disinfection Tower used for rapid and chemical free disinfection of high infection prone areas. 
  • Russia is going to launch 1st Arktika-M satellite for monitoring Arctic climate this year at the end of the year, General Director of Lavochkin aerospace company Vladimir Kolmykov announced today.
    • The satellite will be launched by Soyuz -2,1b carrier rocket with frigate booster.
    • The remote sensing  Artika-M will monitor the  meterological conditions in the polar region.
