International Current Affairs
  • World Press Freedom Day is being observed today.
    • Theme of World Press Freedom Day 2020 : "Journalism without Fear or Favour."
    • This day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in December 1993, following the recommendation of UNESCO's General Conference. 
    • Since then, 3 May, the anniversary of the Declaration of Windhoek is celebrated worldwide as the World Press Freedom Day to pay gratitude to those journalists who lost their lives in order to bring us honest and real news.
National Current Affairs
  • The recovery rate of COVID-19 patients has improved to over 26 percent in India. 
    • A total of 10,632 people have been cured so far. 
    • In the last 24 hours, 682 patients are found cured. 
    • The total number of confirmed cases is now 39,980 in the country.
    • Union Health Minister : Dr Harsh Vardhan
  • The Indian Armed Forces (IAF) today expressed their gratitude to the 'corona warriors' across the country. 
    • As part of an aerial salute to medical professionals and other frontline workers, flypast by jets and helicopters from Indian Air Force and Indian Navy was carried out. 
    • They also showered flower petals over hospitals treating COVID-19 patients across different places in the country including King George's Medical University in Lucknow and Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru.
  • Maharashtra has announced to provide free health cover to all its citizens under the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana
    • With this, Maharashtra became the 1st state to provide free and cashless health insurance to its citizens.
  • Indian Railways is running 'Shramik Special Trains' to move migrant workers, pilgrims, tourists, students and others stranded due to lockdown. 
    • These trains run from point to point on request of the concerned state governments. 
    • Only those found asymptomatic can travel and wearing face mask is compulsory. 
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has cancelled the licence of CKP Co-operative Bank Ltd, with operations in Maharashtra, with effect from the close of business on April 30, 2020. 
    • Once the bank is liquidated, its depositors will be able to avail deposit insurance limit of ₹5 lakh.
  • In spite of problems in procurement & logistics due to COVID-19 lockdown, Pradhanmantri  Bhartiya Jan aushadhi Kendras –PMBJAK ,achieved a record sales turnover of  52 crore rupees in the month of April  2020 compared to 42 crore rupees in March 2020. It was 17 crore in April 2019
    • As the entire country is facing a big challenge due to COVID-19 Pandemic, demand for medicines and medical equipment are very high and to cater this demand Jan aushadhi Kendras  delivered a record Rs. 52 crore worth of affordable and quality medicines to the public  during April 2020.

  • Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has set up a 8 Member Consultation Committee to revive the state economy. 
    • Head of this Committee : S C Das (Retired IAS officer)
  • Former Chief Justice of the Chhattisgarh High Court and Lokpal member Ajay Kumar Tripathi passed away today at AIIMS trauma centre due to Covid 19
  • Sam Lloyd (56), known for his role as lawyer Ted Buckland in TV show 'Scrubs', passed away due to complications from lung cancer. 
    • In a career spanning over three decades, Sam also featured in shows like 'Desperate Housewives', 'Seinfeld', 'Modern Family', among others. Condoling his death, 'Scrubs' creator Bill Lawrence tweeted, "He'll be missed by so many."
New Appointments
  • The Yes Bank board of directors have appointed Neeraj Dhawan as the Chief Risk Officer of the bank with immediate effect for a 3-year period. 
    • Mr Dhawan has replaced Ashish Agarwal.
Sports Current Affairs
  • The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) today extended the period of suspension of all competitions until the end of July 2020 over the coronavirus pandemic.
