International Current Affairs
  • Today (23rd May) is World Turtle Day.
    • The purpose of this day is to bring attention to, and increase knowledge of and respect for, turtles and tortoises, and encourage human action to help them survive and thrive.

National Current Affairs
  • As many as 6,654 coronavirus cases were confirmed in India in the last 24 hours, marking the biggest one-day jump so far and taking the total number of cases to 1,25,101
    • Meanwhile, 137 deaths have been recorded in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll to 3,720. 
    • Out of the total cases, 69,597 cases are active.
  • To provide job to every labourer, Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan today launched the Shram Siddhi campaign in every Panchayat. 
    • Job cards will be given to labourers after a door-to-door survey and then they will be given jobs. 
    • Unskilled labourers will be provided work under MGNREGA and skilled labourers will be provided with work according to their ability.
  • Uttar Pradesh government has invoked the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) that bans strikes in all government corporations and departments for 6 months. 
    • The Act gives the police the power to arrest anybody without a warrant if they are found violating the provisions of the Act. 
Science & Technology
  • Researchers from Australia's Monash, Swinburne and RMIT universities have recorded the fastest internet data speed of 44.2 Terabits per second (Tbps)
    • It is capable of downloading 1000 HD movies in a split second. 
    • They achieved it by using a device that replaces around 80 lasers found in existing telecoms hardware, with a single equipment known as a 'micro-comb'.
  • American freeware, cross-platform messaging and Voice over IP (VoIP) service WhatsApp in its latest beta version is testing a feature which will allow users to add contacts through scanning QR codes
    • Beta testers will be able to see a small QR code on their settings page which can be used by another user to add them. The QR code can be reset by a user multiple times.
New Appointments
  • Indian economist, Abhas Jha, has been appointed World Bank's Practice Manager for Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management for South Asia
    • Earlier, Jha held a key position on urban development and disaster risk management in East Asia and Pacific region. 
    • He joined the Bank in 2001 and served as Adviser to Executive Director for Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Sri Lanka.
Sports Current Affairs
  • International badminton is set to return to action with Hyderabad Open on August 11, according to the revised Badminton World Federation calendar. 
    • India Open, which was scheduled to place place from March 24 to 29 but was suspended over COVID-19, will now be held from December 8 to 13. 
    • Syed Modi India International will be held from November 17.
