National Current Affairs
  • The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare today announced that the total number of coronavirus cases in India has risen to 74,281 from yesterday's 70,756 cases. 
    • Meanwhile, 122 coronavirus deaths have been recorded in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll to 2,415. 
    • Out of the total cases, 47,480 cases are active, while 24,385 patients have been cured/discharged.
  • Jammu and Kashmir is going to provide tap water connection to all rural households by December, 2022 under the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM)
    • During the current year, the Union Territory (UT) is planning for 100% coverage of all 5,000 villages of 3 districts i.e. Gandharbal, Srinagar and Raisi.
  • A total of 8503 Indians have been flown back to India in 43 inbound flights operated by Air India and Air India Express under Vande Bharat Mission in 6 days beginning from 7th May 2020.
    • Note : Government of India started Vande Bharat Mission - one of the largest initiatives to repatriate nationals back to India, on 7th May 2020. Under this mission, Ministry of Civil Aviation is coordinating with Ministry of External Affairs and state Governments for bringing Indians back to their homeland.
  • The Ministry of Tourism’s Dekho Apna Desh webinar series yesterday, titled, ‘Odisha-India’s Best kept secret’ took the participants on a virtual journey into Odisha. 
    • The webinar was 18th webinar under Dekho Apna Desh Webinar Series.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a ₹20 lakh crore economic package amid the coronavirus pandemic.
    • India's $266 billion COVID-19 stimulus package amounts to 10% of GDP. 
    • Japan's fiscal support stands at 21% of GDP, while the US has rolled out spending worth 13% of its output. 
  • Here are some important measures taken by government for relief and credit support related to businesses, especially MSMEs to support Indian Economy’s fight against COVID-19.
    • Due Dates for various tax relatedcompliances extended
    • EPF Contribution to be reduced for Employers and Employees for 3 months to 10% from 12% for all establishments covered by EPFO for next 3 months
    • Extending the Employees Provident Fund Support for business and organised workers for another 3 months for salary months of June, July and August 2020
    • New Definition of MSME and other Measures for MSME
    • No Global tenders for Government tenders of uptoRs 200 crore
    • Reduction in Rates of ‘Tax Deduction at Source’ and ‘Tax Collected at Source” by 25% for the remaining period of FY 20-21
    • Relief to Contractors given by extension of up to six months for completion of contractual obligations, including in respect of EPC and concession agreements
    • Relief to Real Estate Projects the registration and completion date for all registered projects will be extended up to six months.
    • Rs 20,000 crore Subordinate Debt for Stressed MSMEs
    • Rs 3 lakh crore Emergency Working Capital Facility for Businesses, including MSMEs
    • Rs 50,000 crore equity infusion through MSME Fund of Funds
    • Rs 90,000 crore Liquidity Injection for DISCOMs
    • Rs. 30,000 crore Special Liquidity Scheme for NBFC/HFC/MFIs
    • Rs. 45,000 crore Partial credit guarantee Scheme 2.0 for Liabilities of NBFCs/MFIs
    • Tax relief to business as pending income tax refunds to charitable trusts and non-corporate businesses and professions to be issued immediately
  • The New Development Bank of the BRICS countries has said that it has fully disbursed a $1 billion emergency assistance loan to India which was approved by the bank's board on April 30. 
    • The loan is aimed at helping the government contain the spread of coronavirus and reduce human, social and economic losses caused by the pandemic.
  • India overtook China in fintech funding in the first quarter of 2020 for the first time in five quarters, CB Insights reported.
    • China saw its worst quarter for fintech with 29 deals totalling $175 million in the quarter. 
    • India's fintech industry's deals totalled $421 million. Asia saw a drop of 69% in funding quarter-over-quarter to $883 million.
  • Home delivery has been made mandatorily cashless in Ahmedabad to prevent the spread of COVID-19 through currencies.
    • Cash on delivery (COD) will not be allowed in the city starting May 15.
Science & Technology
  • Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is developing a low-cost, portable and battery-operated device to test coronavirus, the varsity announced today. 
    • According to JNU, the device can complete testing in 50 minutes while it takes 120-180 minutes through the conventional method. 
    • The device is being developed by a team led by Jaydeep Bhattacharya from the School of Biotechnology at JNU.
Deaths
  • Famous saint Swami Virakt Anand ji Maharaj alias Shobhan Sarkar passed away today in Shivli area of Kanpur Dehat district in Uttar Pradesh.
    • He came into limelight after Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) team came to Uttar Pradesh for gold digging in the year 2013, following his dream about tones of hidden gold.
New Appointments
  • 1990 batch IAS officer of Odisha cadre Manoj Ahuja has been appointed the new Chairman of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)
    • He is currently working as Special Director, Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Department of Personnel and Training. 
    • He is going to replace Anita Karwal, who is appointed as Secretary at the Department of School Education and Literacy.
Sports Current Affairs
  • The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has formed a committee to prepare a Standard Operating Procedure to resume training in all SAI Centres in all sporting disciplines after the lockdown is lifted. 
    • Headed by : Rohit Bharadwaj (Secretary, Sports Authority of India)
  • 4-time Formula One world champion Sebastian Vettel will leave Ferrari at the end of the season, the Italian team announced today.
    • The 32-year-old had joined the team in 2015.
