International Current Affairs
  • Russia has reported 11,012 new cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours, bringing the nationwide tally to 2,09,688. 
    • With this, Russia became the 5th country in the world to report over 2 lakh cases of coronavirus.

National Current Affairs
  • Health Ministry today announced that the recovery rate of patients from COVID-19 infection has gone up to 31.15 per cent
    • A total of 4, 213 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been reported in the last 24 hours and 1,559 patients have recovered and discharged from the hospitals. 
    • Taking the fresh confirmed cases, the total number has gone up to 67,152  in the country so far. 
    • Out of the total cases, 20, 926 patients have cured while 2,206 have died. 
  • Indian Railways has announced gradual restart of special passenger train services from tomorrow. 
    • Initially, 15 pairs of trains will ply with passengers on board. 
    • Out of these, 14 trains will start from tomorrow, connecting New Delhi  station to Dibrugarh, Agartala, Howrah, Patna, Bilaspur, Ranchi, Bhubaneswar, Secunderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram, Madgaon, Mumbai Central and Ahmedabad. 
    • While the 15th train from New Delhi to Jammu will start from  Wednesday instead of  tomorrow.
Science & Technology
  • National Technology Day is being observed today (11th May 2020) across India to signify the glorious achievements of Indian science and technology. .
    • Important Points to Note :
      • On this day in 1998, India successfully carried out Nuclear tests in Rajasthan's Pokhran
      • On the same day India also performed successful test firing of the Trishul Missile and had test flown the 1st indigenous aircraft - ‘Hansa - 3
  • The National Institute of Virology Pune has successfully developed India's first indigenous antibody detection kit for coronavirus
    • "This kit was validated at two sites in Mumbai and has high sensitivity & accuracy. Besides, it has the advantage of testing 90 samples together in a single run of 2.5 hours," Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said.
  • National Institute of Technology, (NIT) Tiruchirappalli has been sanctioned a cutting edge Super Computer at a cost of Rs 17 crores, by the Union Ministry of Science and Technology. 
    • This follows the premier engineering institute being declared as part of the National Super Computing Mission (NSM), of the Government of India.
New Appointments
  • 1987 Batch IAS officer of Jharkhand cadre, Indu Shekhar Chaturvedi (IAS) today assumed charge as new Secretary, Ministry of New & Renewable Energy.   
    • He has replaced Anand Kumar who earlier took charge Secretary, Ministry of Culture.
    • Prior to  this appointment, Mr. Chaturvedi was serving as Additional Chief Secretary and Additional Secretary (Climate Change Department ) of the Ministry of Climate Change Department,  Environment & Forest, Government of Jharkhand.
Deaths
  • Noted historian Hari Vasudevan (68) has died of coronavirus at a private hospital in Kolkata. 
    • Vasudevan was an expert on European and Russian history and India-Russia relationship. 
    • He was a professor at Calcutta University. He graduated from Cambridge University, where he also completed his post-graduation and PhD. He authored many books.
  • American comedian-actor Jerry Stiller (92), who played Frank Costanza from 1993 to 1998 in comedy TV series 'Seinfeld', has passed away due to natural causes. 
Sports Current Affairs
  • Deepa Malik, the 2016 Paralympics silver medallist, announced her retirement to hold her post as the President of the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) in accordance with the National Sports Code.
