International Current Affairs
  • Mother's Day is being celebrated in many parts of the world today.
    • The day is celebrated on the 2nd Sunday of May and dedicated to the special bond between the mother and the child, which is one of the most amazing relationships on this planet.
  • Nepal today said that India's decision to inaugurate the link road connecting to Lipulekh pass, which it claims to be part of its territory, is a breach of an agreement between the two countries. 
    • Responding to Nepal, the government said, "Recently inaugurated road section...lies completely within India's territory. The road follows pre-existing route used by Kailash Mansarovar Yatra pilgrims."
  • A new coronavirus case has been reported in China's Wuhan
    • The new case, which is the 1st in the epicentre of China's outbreak since April 3, was previously asymptomatic, according to the health commission. 
    • Note : China, which has reported 4,633 coronavirus deaths so far, had officially designated all areas of the country as low-risk last week.
National Current Affairs
  • The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare announced today that the total number of coronavirus cases in India has risen to 62,939 from yesterday's 59,662 cases. 
    • Meanwhile, 128 coronavirus deaths have been recorded in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll to 2,109. 
    • Out of the total cases, 41,472 cases are active, while 19,357 patients have been cured/discharged.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold a meeting with the State Chief Ministers through video conferencing tomorrow afternoon. 
    • He will review India's progress in containing the coronavirus pandemic.
    • Discussion on further relaxations to boost up economic activities is likely to take place. 
    • The meeting will also be attended by Home Minister Amit Shah, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharman and Health Minister Harsh Vardhan including other senior officials.
Science & Technology
  • To celebrate the National Technology Day, a high-level digital conference on ‘Rebooting the Economy through Science, Technology and Research Translations titled RESTART’ will be organised by Technology Development Board (TDB) a statutory body of the Department of Science & Technology (DST) and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) tomorrow (11th May 2020).
    • Chief Guest : Dr. Harsh Vardhan (Union Minister for Science & Technology, Health and Family Welfare and Earth Sciences)
  • To sanitise mobile phones, iPads, laptops, currency notes, cheque leafs, challans, passbooks, paper, envelopes, etc, Hyderabad based Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) premier lab, Research Centre Imarat (RCI), has developed an automated contactless UVC sanitisation cabinet, called Defence Research Ultraviolet Sanitiser (DRUVS)
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • To discuss issues including credit offtake to help uplift the economy amid the coronavirus crisis, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will meet CEOs of PSUs tomorrow. 
    • Discussions over interest rate transmission to borrowers by banks and progress on moratorium on loan repayments will take place. 
    • Deployment of excessive funds by banks under reverse repo route will also be discussed.
  • NTPC Ltd, a central PSU under Ministry of Power and India’s largest power generator, has achieved 100 percent Plant Load Factor (PLF) on 9th May 2020, at three of its thermal power stations. 
    • NTPC Vindhyachal (4760 MW) in Madhya Pradesh, NTPC Talcher Kaniha (3000 MW) in Odisha & NTPC Sipat (2980 MW) in Chhattisgarh achieved 100 percent PLF, demonstrating exceptional operational efficiency and optimum capacity utilisation despite lockdown on account of COVID-19 pandemic.
  • National Fertilizers Ltd, a PSU under the ministry of Chemicals and  Fertilizers  registered a 71 percent growth in fertilizer sale in the month of April 2020. 
    • Despite the stringent restrictions in country in April due to COVID-19 lockdown Company recorded fertilizer sale of 3.62 Lakh MT in April' 20 compared to 2.12 Lakh MT in the same period last year.
  • The United States has awarded a $275 million border wall contract for construction of 22.5 kilometres of barriers in South Texas starting January 2021.
    • An Alabama-based company, Caddell Construction won the contract.
