International Current Affairs
  • Today (26th April) is World Intellectual Property Day.
    • The event was established by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2000 to "raise awareness of how patents, copyright, trademarks and designs impact on daily life" and "to celebrate creativity, and the contribution made by creators and innovators to the development of societies across the globe".
    • 26 April was chosen as the date to celebrate this day because it coincides with the date on which the Convention Establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization entered into force in 1970.
    • Theme of World Intellectual Property Day 2020 : Innovate for a Green Future.’
  • More than 2 lakh people worldwide have died due to novel Coronavirus (Covid 19) so far. 
    • There are over 2.8 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 around the world. 
    • More than 210 countries and territories have reported cases.
    • Five countries have now reported death tolls above 20,000. The US, Italy and Spain have seen the highest number of reported fatalities.
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a bill into a law that shifts the end date of the World War II to September 3
    • The end of the war is internationally recognised as September 2,1945, the day on which Japan formally surrendered. 
    • However, as per the bill, a Soviet decree had declared September 3 as the day they defeated Japan.
  • High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh Riva Ganguly Das today handed over emergency medical supplies consisting of 1 lakh Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) tablets and 50 thousand sterile surgical gloves to Bangladesh.
    • Health Minister of Bangladesh Zahid Maleque appreciated the continued support of India in providing medical supplies, protective gear and capacity building in the fight against Covid 19.
    • Note : Earlier, India had provided 30 thousand surgical masks and 15 thousand head-covers to Bangladesh on 25 March in the first tranche of assistance under Covid 19 emergency fund.
National Current Affairs
  • The total number of coronavirus cases in India has risen to 26,917, while the death toll has surged to 826. 
    • As many as 5,914 COVID-19 patients have been cured, discharged or migrated. 
    • The coronavirus recovery rate in India is currently at 21.97%. 
    • Important Note : Maharashtra has reported the most number of coronavirus cases and deaths till now.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Around 50 Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officers have submitted policy suggestions for reviving India's economy after COVID-19 where they suggested raising the highest income tax rate to 40% for those who earn over ₹1 crore a year
    • They also suggested an option to re-introduce wealth tax for the people with a net wealth of ₹5 crore or more.
  • Mortgage lender HDFC today announced that it has acquired 6.43% stake in Reliance Capital by invoking pledged shares.
Science  & Technology
  • Kerala is using robots to minimise the human interaction in the Covid 19 treatment
    • The Robot named "Nightingale-19", is being used to provide food and medicines to Covid patients at the district Covid centre in Ancharakandi in Kannur district in Kerala. 
    • The robot also has a special display facility, attached to it, that allows patients to communicate with health workers and their relatives.
    • Note : Nightingale 19 was designed by the group of Engg students with the support of the State Health Department and developed by ASIMOV robotics, a company working under Kerala start-up mission. 
  • India-born American printmaker Zarina Hashmi (83) passed away in London after a long illness. 
    • The artist, a proponent of minimalist art, had several ongoing shows, including solos at New Delhi’s Kiran Nadar Museum of Art and the Pulitzer Arts Foundation in Missouri, and group exhibitions at the Guggenheim and Met Breur in New York.

    • Ravi Mittal - Sports Secretary.
    • Amit Khare - Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (additional charge)
    • Anita Karwal - Secretary, School Education and Literacy.
    • Preeti Sudan - Health Secretary  (3 month extension)
    • Tarun Kapoor - Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas
    • Tarun Bajaj - Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs in Ministry of Finance
