International Current Affairs
  • Today (25th April) is World Malaria Day.
    • This day recognizes global efforts to control malaria.
    • Globally, 3.3 billion people in 106 countries are at risk of malaria.
    • Theme for World Malaria Day 2020 : “Zero Malaria Starts with Me“.
    • Important Note :
      • Wolrd Malaria Day is one of eight official global public health campaigns currently marked by the World Health Organization (WHO).
      • Remaining days are,
        • World Health Day,
        • World Blood Donor Day,
        • World Immunization Week,
        • World Tuberculosis Day,
        • World No Tobacco Day,
        • World Hepatitis Day and
        • World AIDS Day.
  • World leaders have pledged to accelerate work on new vaccines, tests and treatments for COVID-19 and ensure equal access for all, as part of a WHO initiative. 
    • The leaders who joined the virtual event to launch what WHO referred to as a "landmark collaboration" are :
      • Emmanuel Macron (French President)
      • Angela Merkel (German Chancellor)
      • Cyril Ramaphosa (South African President)
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Government has declared Banking industry as a public utility service for 6  months till October 21 under the provisions of the Industrial Disputes Act.
    • Bringing banking services under the provisions of this Act means that the banking sector would not see any strikes by employees or officers during the operation of the law starting from April 21. 
  • The government has allowed all Non-essential shops to open with 50% employees.
    • Wearing of masks and social distancing would be mandatory in the shops. 
    • The prohibition on shops in malls and market complexes within the limits of municipal corporations would remain in place. 
    • The above relaxations aren't applicable in hotspots and containment zones.
  • Traders' body CAIT (Confederation of All India Traders) and DPIIT (Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade) have partnered to launch a nationwide e-commerce platform for local grocery stores to be able to take orders online amid COVID-19. 
    • The portal will have a digitally enabled payment system and CAIT will provide logistics and other support through its partners. 
    • Traders using the platform will also be able to choose their preferred partners.
Awards & Honors
  • The 67th edition of the National Film Awards, which was scheduled for May 3, has been delayed indefinitely amid the nationwide lockdown due to coronavirus pandemic. 
    • "The jury itself hasn't been assembled as yet," filmmaker Rahul Rawail, who was the jury head last year, announced.
  • Malayalam actor Ravi Vallathol (67), who was the son of late Malayalam author-dramatist TN Gopinathan Nair and the nephew of late poet Vallathol Narayana Menon, has passed away.
    • Vallathol was known for films like 'Chathurangam', 'Samantharangal' and 'Dada Sahib', among others.
New Appointments
  • Retired IAS officer Sanjay Kothari took oath as the next Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) at a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan today.  
    • The 1978 Haryana cadre IAS officer, has been formally appointed more than two months after a High Powered Committee (HPC) headed by Mr. Modi selected him as the next CVC.
    • President Kovind administered the oath wearing a face mask.
