International Current Affairs
  • Every year, 22nd April is celebrated as the Global Earth Day
    • This year 2020 marks 50 years since the start of this modern environmental movement. 
    • The world's 1st ever Earth Day was observed on 22nd April 1970, in the United States of America to increase public awareness about environmental problems. 
    • It was founded by United States senator Gaylord Nelson, as a reaction to a massive oil spill in California in 1969.
    • Aim of Earth Day : To bring attention to environmental issues to spark changes that will result in a healthy, sustainable environment. 
    • With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic—as most parts of the world remain under lockdown, the Earth Day has gone digital to keep up the momentum. 
    • Theme of Global Earth Day 2020 : "Climate Action".
  • US President Donald Trump has clarified that the immigration ban in US will last for 60 days and will be applicable to only those seeking permanent residency in the country. 
    • Trump earlier said he'll be doing so because of the attack from the invisible enemy (coronavirus).
  • India has dropped two places in the 2020 World Press Freedom Index, ranking 142 out of 180 countries. 
    • Note : Norway is ranked first in the Index for the fourth year running. 
  • Pakistan has removed around 1,800 names from its Terrorism Watch List since March, including 2008 Mumbai attack mastermind and Lashkar-e-Taiba leader Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, according to a US-based start-up. 
    • The list, which contained about 7,600 names in 2018, has been reduced by nearly 4,000 in the past 18 months "without a public explanation", as per data by the start-up.
National Current Affairs
  • The government has brought in an ordinance to amend the Epidemic Diseases Act making attacks on doctors, paramedic staff and ASHA workers a non-bailable and cognisable offence punishable up to 7 years in prison and fine of up to Rs 5 lakhs.
    • Those found to be vandalising the private clinic or a car belonging to a doctor will be asked to pay twice the market value of these assets.
  • The government announced to conduct a Telephonic survey to gather citizen feedback on prevalence and distribution of COVID-19 symptoms. Citizens will receive a call from the number '1921'. 
  • Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today announced that an aid of ₹1,000 each will be given to families that don't have ration cards but were identified by self-help groups of Jeevika
    • Later, they'll be issued ration cards after verification of documents, he added. 
    • The aid will be provided to families in urban areas after identifying them through a survey, he said.
  • The government has created a dedicated Twitter account called '@CovidIndiaSeva' to give real-time solutions to COVID-19 related queries. 
    • The platform is only for broader queries and doesn't require users to share health records. 
    • The move aims to enable transparent e-governance delivery at large scales.

  • Lav Agarwal, the 48-year-old Joint Secretary at Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, has been addressing the press conferences on India's COVID-19 response for more than 40 days. 
    • A 1996 batch IAS officer of Andhra Pradesh cadre, Agarwal studied mechanical engineering at IIT Delhi.
    • He cracked the civil services exam in 1996 with an all-India rank of 21.
Deaths
  • The UK's 1st Sikh accident and emergency consultant Manjeet Singh Riyat  has died at the hospital where he worked after contracting coronavirus
    • He qualified from the University of Leicester in 1992 and trained in emergency medicine at Leicester Royal Infirmary and Lincoln County hospital. 
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Social networking giant Facebook has announced an investment of $5.7 billion in Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries' digital services unit Jio Platforms, which owns Reliance Jio. 
    • The US company will get 10% of Jio Platforms, this is the largest investment for a minority stake by a technology company anywhere in the world. 
    • It's also the largest FDI in the technology sector in India.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI)  has asked banks to extend the benefit of Interest Subvention (IS) and Prompt Repayment Incentive (PRI) for short-term crop loans to farmers till 31st May, 2020
    • In a notification, RBI said, it has observed that many farmers are not able to travel to bank branches for payment of their short-term crop loan dues due to the national lockdown imposed in view of the coronavirus outbreak.
