International Current Affairs
  • In the wake of Coronavirus outbreak, US President Donald Trump today announced that he will sign an executive order to temporarily suspend immigration into America
    • The coronavirus outbreak has killed more than 40,000 people in the US and more than 750,000 cases have been confirmed..
  • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his election rival Benny Gantz today signed an agreement to form an emergency coalition government after holding three consecutive elections in over a year. 
    • According to the agreement, Netanyahu, who is under criminal indictment in three corruption cases, will remain prime minister for 18 months after which Gantz will replace him.
  • Sri Lanka's Chairman of the National Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya has announced that the parliamentary elections in the country, that were postponed due to the coronavirus spread, will be held on June 20.
National Current Affairs
  • The Government of India celebrates April 21 every year as Civil Services day
    • Purpose of this day : To rededicate and recommit themselves to the cause of the people.
    • The day provides an unique opportunity for introspection as also for working out future strategies to deal with the challenges being posed by the ever changing times. 
    • Note : The Civil Services Day 2019 was not observed due to Lok Sabha elections.
  • A day after Goa became the first zero COVID-19 state in India, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has announced that the two coronavirus patients in the state have "fully recovered" and have tested negative for the virus. 
    • "I am glad to share that Manipur is now corona(virus) free," said Singh on Twitter. 
  • The government has asked all its departments to include 'Transgender' as a separate category of gender for recruitment in civil services and other posts
    • The move is based on the provisions of the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, notified in December last year. 
    • The Act also provides for grievance redressal mechanism in each establishment.
  • Nearly a month after taking oath, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan today expanded the state Cabinet.
    • Narottam Mishra, Tulsi Silawat, Kamal Patel, Govind Singh Rajput and Meena Singh took the oath of office as ministers. 
  • The government has announced that the condition of coronavirus spread is getting serious in 11 districts across 4 states
    • They include Rajasthan's Jaipur, MP's Indore, Maharashtra's Mumbai and Pune, and West Bengal's Kolkata, Howrah, North 24 Parganas, Medinipur East, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling and Kalimpong.  
    • Note : The Health Ministry today announced that the recovery rate of COVID-19 in the country is 17.47 per cent.
  • The government has made it compulsory for all employees of e-commerce companies to download the COVID-19 tracking app Aarogya Setu
    • The decision is a part of the government's standard operating procedure (SOP) for all workers working during COVID-19. 
    • As part of the SOP, the company's COO will be held responsible for communicating requirements to stakeholders and implementing sanitisation norms.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced the calendar of the meetings of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) for the current financial year. 
    • The decision of the first meet will be announced on 5th June 2020.
    • As per the schedule announced by the RBI, the next Monetary Policy Committee meeting will take place during June 3 to 5
    • The MPC decision is announced on the last day of the meeting.
    • It stated that the other meetings will take place on August 4 to 6, 2020; September 29-30 and October 1, 2020; December 2 to 4, 2020; and February 3 to 5, 2021.
    • Note : The previous MPC meeting was advanced in view of the COVID-19 outbreak to March 24, 26 and 27 from originally scheduled for March 31, April 1 and 3.
  • The government today allowed the use of Surplus rice available with Food Corporation of India (FCI) to be converted into ethanol in order to manufacture alcohol-based hand sanitisers and also for blending with petrol. 
    • Note : The FCI has 30.97 million tonnes of rice in its godowns.
Deaths
  • Oscar-winning illustrator and animation filmmaker Gene Deitch (95) passed away.
    • He is best known for directing cartoon shows 'Tom and Jerry' and 'Popeye The Sailor'.
New Appointments
  • US President Donald Trump today appointed Indian-American Sudarsanam Babu as a Member of the National Science Board.
    • He is the 3rd Indian American to be part of the board and will be in the position 6 years. 
    • Sudarshanam completed his Master of Technology from IIT-Madras, he also holds a PhD from Cambridge University.
