International Current Affairs
- Today (6th January 2019) is World Day for War Orphans.
- This day was initiated by the French organisation, SOS Enfants en Detresses.
- Held on 6th January each year, this special day enables the International Community to recognise the plight of a particularly vulnerable group.
- The Nepal Government is set to introduce a law which makes it mandatory for the children to deposit 5 to 10 per of their income into the bank accounts of parents to ensure their well-being.
- The government will present a bill on the amendment to the Senior Citizens Act, 2063 (2006) with such a provision.
- The move is primarily aimed at ensuring the security of senior citizens.
- The United Nations has called for an independent and impartial investigation into the recently held general elections in Bangladesh amid accusations of violence and voting irregularities.
- In Saudi Arabia, a new regulation is set to stop Saudi women from not knowing about their own divorce.
- Starting from today, courts will be required to notify women by text on rulings confirming their divorces.
- The directive would ensure women are fully aware of their marital status and can protect rights such as alimony.
National Current Affairs
- The Union Cabinet today approved the restructuring of existing National Health Agency as "National Health Authority" for better implementation of Pradhan Mantri - Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY).
- With this approval, the existing society "National Health Agency" has been dissolved and will be replaced by National Health Authority as an attached office to Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.
- The National Health Authority would be empowered with full autonomy, accountability and the mandate to implement PM-JAY through an efficient, effective and transparent decision-making process by aligning the accountability with responsibility.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi has laid the foundation of several irrigation projects, including the revival of Mandal Dam project worth ₹2,391.36-crore, in Jharkhand.
- The dam, work for which was stalled since 1993, will provide irrigation to 19,604-hectare area in Jharkhand, and Bihar.
- Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari today laid the foundation stone for six road projects worth over ₹5,300 crore in Jodhpur.
- The 4th edition of the annual cleanliness survey Swachh Survekshan 2019 was launched in New Delhi today.
- It will be conducted across 4,237 towns and cities.
- The completely digital and paperless survey will be completed in a record time of 24 days.
- Objective of Swachh Survekshan 2019 : To encourage largescale participation of citizens and to ensure sustainability of the initiatives taken towards garbage-free and open defecation-free cities.
- Kumbh Mela, which is touted as the largest congregation of humanity in the world and a collective act of faith, will be held in Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad) over a course of 48 days during January 15 to March 4.
- During the festival, tens of millions of people, primarily Hindus, bathe at the confluence of the Ganga, the Yamuna and Sarasvati.

- Padma Shri Awardee Arunima Sinha, who became the world's first woman amputee to climb Mount Everest in 2013, has now conquered Mount Vinson, making her the world's first woman amputee to scale Antarctica's highest peak.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
- The Asia competitiveness institute (ACI) has released the Ease of Doing Business (EDB) Rankings for Indian states.
- Andhra Pradesh has topped the rankings.
- Maharashtra and Delhi came in second and third place respectively.
- Note : EDB index is based upon three parameters called ABC. They are :
- Attractiveness to Investors
- Business Friendliness
- Competitiveness Policies
- As part of the Mission Shakti scheme, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced interest-free loans for women Self-Help Groups (SHGs).
- He also announced seed money worth ₹15,000 for new SHGs and ₹3,000 to purchase smartphones for digital empowerment.
- Indian Railways is planning to seal stations like airports and passengers would require to arrive 15-20 minutes before their train's scheduled departure to complete the security check process.
- The hi-tech security plan has been implemented in Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh) and Hubli (Karnataka) stations.
Sports Current Affairs
- Bengaluru Bulls beat Gujarat Fortune Giants in the finals of the 6th edition of 2018-19 Vivo Pro Kabaddi League held in Mumbai to lift their maiden trophy.
- Both the sides had been previous runner-ups in the Pro Kabaddi League.
- Pro Kabaddi League is a professional kabaddi league in India since 2014.
- This season began on 7th October 2018 and concluded on 5th January 2019.
- Switzerland's Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic defeated Germany's Alexander Zverev and Angelique Kerber to lift the 4th Hopman Cup title.
- With this, Federer became the 1st person in history to win the Hopman Cup on three occasions.
