International Current Affairs
  • Today (2nd April) is World Autism Awareness Day.
    • This day was adopted by United Nations on 18 December 2007, it was proposed by Qatar, and supported by all UN member states.
    • World Autism Awareness Day 2018 Theme : "Empowering women and girls with autism"
  • Today (2nd April) is International Children's Book Day.
    • This day is a yearly event sponsored by the International Board on Books for Young People, an international non-profit organization.
    • April the 2nd was chosen to mark this day for young literature lovers as it's the same date as Hans Christian Andersen's birthday, the author of many famous children's stories like The Little Mermaid and The Ugly Duckling.
  • According to a report released by global startup ecosystem map Startupblink, India ranked 37th in the Global startup ecosystem in 2017
    • United States topped the list followed by the United Kingdom. 
  • Israel has reached a deal with the United Nations to settle African migrants in western countries, scrapping its earlier plans to deport them to Africa.
    • As many as 16,000 African asylum seekers living in Israel will be sent to western countries. 
    • The new deal will be implemented over a period of five years.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Prohibiting the spread of fake news, the Malaysia today passed the 'Anti-Fake News 2018' bill
    • The new law sets out fines of up to 500,000 ringgit (over ₹84 lakh) and a maximum six years in jail. 
  • Sweden today introduced a new Aviation Tax requiring all passenger flights in the country to have an added charge ranging from 60 kronor (₹470) to 400 kronor (₹3,100), depending on the destination. 
    • The objective of the tax is to minimise the carbon footprint of flights following a sharp increase in air travel.
  • The Indian government today imposed a 10% import duty on three key smartphone components with a view to boost domestic manufacturing. 
    • The components are camera modules for phones, Printed Circuit Board Assembly, and connectors
Awards & Honors
  • 7 years after leading India to victory in the World Cup final, the former India captain MS Dhoni received Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian honour, at Rashtrapati Bhavan. 
    • Note : Dhoni is the 11th cricketer to receive the award.
  • The Mangaluru International Airport (Karnataka) was named the Cleanest airport in India at Airports Authority of India's 23rd annual day celebrations in New Delhi.
Deaths
  • South Africa's anti-apartheid activist Winnie Madikizela-Mandela (81) passed away today. 
    • Winnie was the former wife of South Africa's President Nelson Mandela.
Science & Technology
  • China's "out-of-control" Tiangong-1 space laboratory  re-entered the Earth's atmosphere today, 'mostly' burning up as it headed towards the central region of the South Pacific. 
    • The 10.4-metre-long 8.5-tonne station, also known as the Heavenly Palace, was placed in orbit in September 2011 for docking and orbit experiments, but it ceased functioning in March 2016.
    • Note : Tiangong-1 (Heavenly Palace or Celestial Palace-1) was China’s first prototype space station or space laboratory.  
  • The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)'s supersonic parachute, which will help missions to land on Mars, was successfully launched today. 
    • Note : NASA's Mars rover is scheduled to launch in two years.
