International Current Affairs
  • Today (8th March) is International Women’s Day.
    • This day is observed to recognize women for their achievements without regard to divisions.
    • The first National Women's Day was observed by the American Socialist Party on February 28, 1909.

  • Today (2nd Thursday of March) is World Kidney Day.
    • This day is a global health campaign celebrated every year all across the world in order to raise the public awareness about the kidneys importance and its contributions to the overall health.
    • It is celebrated to make the common public aware about the diseases and problems of the kidneys in order to reduce the occurrence of kidney diseases as well as all the associated health problems of the kidneys.

  • India and Pakistan today agreed on a proposal suggested by the External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to release each other's mentally challenged, women and elderly prisoners above the age of 70.
MOUs & Agreements
  • The Union Cabinet approved the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Cooperation in the field of Renewable Energy between India and Hellenic.
    • This MoU envisages establishing a Joint Working Group to review, monitor and discuss matters relation to areas of cooperation. 
    • The MoU aims for exchange of expertise and networking of information.
  • The Union Cabinet has also approved signing of Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement between India and France
    • This agreement will be signed during forthcoming state visit of French President to India.
National Current Affairs
  • Union Minister Ananthkumar today launched 100% Oxo-biodegradable Sanitary Napkin, ‘Suvidha’, under the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP).
    • The affordable sanitary napkin will be available for Rs. 2.50 per padat over 3200 Janaushadhi Kendrasacross India and would ensure ‘Swachhta, Swasthya and Suvidha’for the underprivileged Women of India.
  • For the first time, the Deccan Queen Express will be operated by an all-woman crew on International Women's Day today. 
    • Surekha Yadav, the first female train driver in Asia, will pilot the express while senior assistant loco pilot Trushna Joshi will assist her. 
    • Note : The Railways had earlier appointed an all-woman crew to manage the Matunga Railway Station in Mumbai.
  • The Maharashtra government today announced that the sale of Gutka, banned in the state, would be made a non-bailable offence.
    • Punishment for the offence would be enhanced to three years in prison.
  • On the occasion of International Women's Day today, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the National Nutrition Mission (NNM), and expansion of the coverage of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao programme, at Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan.
    • Note : The NNM, as an apex body, will monitor, supervise, fix targets and guide the nutrition related interventions across the Ministries.
  • The Karnataka government today approved a separate flag of the state and will now be sent to the central government for approval. 
    • The flag is a tricolour like our national flag, they are Yellow, White and Red
    • The top band is of yellow, the middle is white and last band is red.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Cabinet today approved a hike in Dearness Allowance to central government employees and Dearness Relief to pensioners from 5% to 7%, with effect from January 1, 2018. 
    • The hike is expected to benefit 48.41 lakh central government employees and 61.17 lakh pensioners. 
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has levied a ₹40 lakh penalty on State Bank of India (SBI) for violating rules of detection and impounding of counterfeit notes. 
    • Earlier, RBI imposed a penalty of ₹2 crore on Indian Overseas Bank after a "fraud was detected" at one of its branches.
  • Andhra Pradesh finance minister Yanamala Ramakrishnudu today presented Rs 1.91-lakh-crore budget, and projected a revenue surplus of Rs 5,235 crore, for the financial year 2018-19.
Awards & Honors
  • Indian architect and reputed urban planner Balkrishna Vithaldas  Doshi has been named the winner of Pritzker Prize 2018 for being able to interpret architecture and transform it into buildings that respect Eastern culture. 
    • With this, he became the first Indian to win architecture's highest honour.
New Appointments
  • The leader of Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) Neiphiu Rio today sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Nagaland
Sports Current Affairs
  • In the new contract system announced today, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has hiked the pay of Grade A+ cricketers from ₹2 crore to ₹7 crore. 
    • The newly incorporated A+ bracket includes Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah.
