  55. Have a look at this...

Due to this variation in difficulty level, IBPS will normalise the score (using Equipercentile Method) to take care of the difference in difficulty level, so that no candidate feels he is at a loss because he attempted a session which had tougher set of questions.

    Equipercentile Method Explanation

    Session 1 – Simple Paper
Suppose 20 students appeared for the online exam in Session 1 which was comparatively Easy.
Following table shows the scores of the candidates out of a total of 50 marks, rank and percentile.

The Top Scorer is Ajit has the highest marks i.e. 49/50 and a percentile of 100%

    Session 1 – Easy
Candidate Name Total Marks Obtained Candidate Rank Percentile
    Ajit 49 1 100.0
    Kapil 48 2 94.7
    Sunil 47 3 89.5
    Priya 46 4 84.2
    Kamal 45 5 78.9
    Sanjay 44 6 73.7
    Mohan 43 7 68.4
    Karan 42 8 63.2
    Jigna 41 9 57.9
    Pradeep 40 10 52.6
    Akshay 39 11 47.4
    Binoy 38 12 42.1
    Jagat 37 13 36.8
    Nikhil 36 14 31.6
    Payal 35 15 26.3
    Julie 34 16 21.1
    Amar 33 17 15.8
    Ravi 32 18 10.5
    Nayan 31 19 5.3
    Ajay 30 20 0.0
How can you calculate your Percentile Rank ?
Percentile Rank can also be calculated approximately as :
My Percentile Rank = {[(Total no. of Students) – (My Rank)] / (Total no. of Students-1)} X 100

Moving Further let us see another session where the difficulty level of the exam is high.

    Session 2 – Difficult Paper
Suppose Session 2 is a difficult test and 20 students appeared for it.
The Top Scorer is Navin with the highest marks i.e. 25/50 and a percentile of 100%

    Session 2 – Difficult
Candidate Name Total Marks Obtained Candidate Rank Percentile
    Navin 25 1 100.0
    Mahesh 24 2 94.7
    Prakash 23 3 89.5
    Ashwin 22 4 84.2
    Nividita 21 5 78.9
    Kinjal 20 6 73.7
    Kavita 19 7 68.4
    Reema 18 8 63.2
    Jayesh 17 9 57.9
    Suresh 16 10 52.6
    Aamir 15 11 47.4
    Soha 14 12 42.1
    Javed 13 13 36.8
    Bipin 12 14 31.6
    Sonal 11 15 26.3
    Dipti 10 16 21.1
    Sapna 9 17 15.8
    Moti 8 18 10.5
    Maya 7 19 5.3
    Koyal 6 20 0.0
Deciding which students qualify from each session:-

Depending on the number of vacancies a IBPS will fix a Cut Off Percentile Rank varying from (0-100%). So let us assume that IBPS decides that students securing 75 % and above in the percentile rank will be eligible for the interview, then following is the summary of qualified candidates from both sessions.

    Session 1 – Easy
Candidate Name Total Marks Obtained Candidate Rank Percentile Session Level
    Ajit 49 1 100.0 1 Easy
    Kapil 48 2 94.7 1 Easy
    Sunil 47 3 89.5 1 Easy
    Priya 46 4 84.2 1 Easy
    Kamal 45 5 78.9 1 Easy
    Navin 25 1 100.0 1 Difficult
    Mahesh 24 2 94.7 1 Difficult
    Prakash 23 3 89.5 1 Difficult
    Ashwin 22 4 84.2 1 Difficult
    Nividita 21 5 78.9 1 Difficult
The result shows that 5 students from session 1 (who have higher total scores) and 5 students from session 2 (who have lower total scores) have qualified on the basis of their Percentile Ranks. Thus it will not matter if you got an Easy Paper or a Difficult one, if it is simple, it is simple for all and vice versa. Scores will be Normalized to adjust for difficulty levels across sessions.

    Conclusion
    1. Try and solve every question to the best of your capability.
    2. Don’t be anxious or happy if the paper was easy or tough – scores will be corrected and normailsed accross sessions.
    3. You have done your best, wait for the results and hope they are good, even otherwise life gives you a second chance.

    All the best!!!
