International Current Affairs
  • Today (3rd March) is World Wildlife Day.
    • All UN Member States observe this day to celebrate and raise awareness of the world’s wild fauna and flora.
    • On 20 December 2013, at its 68th session, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) decided to proclaim 3 March, the day of the adoption of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), as World Wildlife Day.
    • This day was proposed by Thailand.
    • Theme for World Wildlife Day 2018 : 'Big Cats'.
    • Using the expanded definition of 'big cats', the Day will raise awareness on the conservation of the lion, tiger, leopard and jaguar, as well as the cheetah, snow leopard, puma, clouded leopard and related species.
  • Today (3rd March) is International Sex Workers Rights Day.
  • The President of Vietnam Tran Dai Quang is on a 3 day visit to India. 
    • Quang is leading an 18-member delegation, including ministers, party leaders, and businessmen, which will attend the Vietnam-India Business Forum.
National Current Affairs
  • Incumbent Nagaland CM TR Zeliang of Naga People's Front (NPF) has won from his constituency Peren in the Nagaland Assembly elections. 
    • He defeated Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party's Iherie Ndang with a margin of 5,432 votes. 
  • Meghalaya CM Mukul Sangma of Congress party has won from both Songsak and Ampati constituencies in the state assembly elections. 
    • He defeated National People's Party's candidate Nihim Shira in Songsak constituency with a margin of 1,830 votes and Bharatiya Janata Party's Bakul Hajong in Ampati with a margin of 8,104 votes.
  • The CPI(M) has conceded defeat in Tripura after the BJP and its ally IPFT won 26 seats and were leading in 17 other constituencies in the 60-member Assembly. 
    • The CPI(M) had formed the ruling government in the state for 25 years. 
Science & Technology
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced an online contest for the citizens to suggest names for new nuclear weapons. "Peace Envoy", "Boomerang", "She Drowned", "Goodbye America" and "sanctions" were among the names suggested by the people for the weapons.
Deaths
  • Former Hindustan Unilever (HUL) Chairman T Thomas (90) passed away. 
    • Thomas was the Chairman of the company, then known as Hindustan Lever, between 1973 and 1980. 
    • He also served as a director on the board of Unilever in London for a decade and was also a non-executive Chairman of companies including Glaxo and Lafarge.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Navjot Kaur became the 1st Indian woman wrestler to win a gold in the Senior Asian Championships after winning in the 65 kg freestyle category event today. 
    • Rio Olympics bronze medallist Sakshi Malik won a bronze in the 62 kg freestyle category.
  • Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat won a silver medal at the ongoing Asian Wrestling Championships in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
  • India defeated Pakistan in the inaugural IBSF Snooker Team World Cup in Doha today. 
    • The Indian team was awarded $15,000 (nearly ₹10 lakh) for winning the tournament.
New Appointments
  • Armenian lawmakers today elected Armen Sargsyan as the country's 4th President.
    • He will replace Serzh Sargsyan in April. 
Careers
  • Facebook is expanding its Jobs feature to search and apply for jobs directly on its platform to more than 40 countries including India.
    • Job seekers can visit 'www.facebook.jobs' and apply to listed companies, where the application would auto-fill with work history and relevant information from the user's Facebook profile.
