  • The African nation of Sierra Leone has become the world's first country to use blockchain technology in elections
    • Note : Russia is also going to use Blockchain technology in its upcoming presidential elections.
  • Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte today formally informed the UN of the country's decision to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC)
    • This comes after ICC started an investigation into allegations of crimes against humanity committed by Duterte in his war against drugs. 
  • India ranked 52nd in recently released Mastercard Index of Women Entrepreneurs (MIWE) 2018.

  • The 1st Indian-origin woman in space, Kalpana Chawla was born on this day (17th March) in the year 1962. 
    • Chawla moved to the United States in 1982 and joined NASA in 1988. 
    • Describing her first mission in space, she said, "You are just your intelligence", on experiencing weightlessness. 
    • The astronaut died with six crew members on her second mission aboard the Columbia spacecraft in 2003.
    • Note : Sunita Williams became the second Indian-origin woman to travel into space in 2006.
  • The Maharashtra Government today banned the use of Plastic in time-bound manner
    • This ban will include plastic bags, thermocol, disposable cups and plates, cutlery, non-woven polypropylene bags, plastic pouches and packaging.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated 105th Indian Science Congress (ISC) at Manipur Central University in Imphal. 
    • Focal theme of ISC 2018 : “Reaching the Unreached Through Science & Technology”.
  • Pune topped the Annual Survey of India’s City-Systems (ASICS) 2017 report in terms of quality of urban governance.
    • This report was released by Bengaluru-based non-profit organisation, Janaagraha.

  • West Bengal has bagged the top spot in the Domestic Ease of Doing Business — an index created by the central government in collaboration with the World Bank.

  • The government recently revealed that nearly 25% of the overseas branches of the state-owned banks suffered losses in 2016-17. 
    • As many as 41 branches out of the 159 foreign branches of state-owned banks reported loss in fiscal 2016-17. 
    • India's largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) topped the list with 9 loss-making foreign branches, followed by Bank of India with 8 such branches.
  • Hong Kong's richest man Li Ka-shing today announced his retirement as the Chairman of conglomerate CK Hutchison Holdings and property giant CK Asset Holdings
    • The 89-year-old will remain an advisor to the group after stepping down as Chairman in May. 
    • He will pass control of his $100-billion retail, infrastructure and property business to elder son Victor Li.
  • Indian government has inked $120 million loan agreement with Asian Development Bank (ADB) for completion of projects to improve Rail Infrastructure along high-density corridors and operational efficiency of Indian railways.
    • The loan has 20-year term, including grace period of 5 years and have annual interest rate determined according to ADB’s London interbank offered rate (LIBOR) based lending facility, and commitment charge of 0.15% per year.
New Appointments
  • China today re-elected Xi Jinping as the country's President after removal of presidential term limits last week. 
    • Jinping is now allowed to hold the post for life.
  • IRS officer Vivek R Wadekar was appointed as the new Special Director in the Enforcement Directorate (ED) by the government.
    • Note : The ED is the central investigative agency, under the Union finance ministry, that enforces the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) in the country.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Football's world governing body FIFA today announced that it was lifting the three-decade-long ban on Iraq to allow the country to host international matches.
