Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "A relationship adrift: on India-Canada ties"
  • Adrift - to fail
  • Go back to the drawing board - to try to think of a completely new idea because the one that you tried before was not successful
  • Red flag - a red flag used as a signal of danger or telling you to stop
  • Protest - a strong complaint or disagreement
  • Shepherd - guide or direct in a particular direction.
  • Genocide - the murder of large numbers of people belonging to a particular race
  • Itinerary - a plan of a journey that you are going to make, including information about when and where you will travel
  • Opt for - to make a choice or decision from a range of possibilities
  • Bilateral - involving two groups or countries
  • Penultimate - just before the last in a series
  • Delegation - a group of people who represent a country, government, or organization
  • Exclude - to deliberately not include something
  • Suspect - to believe that something is true, especially something bad
  • Sympathise with - to approve of and support someone or something
  • Extremist - someone who has beliefs or opinions that are considered to be extremely unreasonable by most people
  • Adamant - determined not to change your belief or decision about something
  • Reach out to someone - to offer help to someone
  • Understandably - as is reasonable or expected.
  • Offended - feeling angry or annoyed
  • Controversy - a disagreement, especially about a public policy or a moral issue that a lot of people have strong feelings about
  • Tone-deafness - the inability to recognize the difference
  • Sensitivity - the quality of understanding how someone feels and being careful not to offend them
  • Discreet - careful not to say anything that is secret or that could upset someone
  • Protocol - a set of rules for the correct way to behave on formal occasions
  • Effusive - expressing happiness, admiration, praise etc in an extremely enthusiastic way
  • Final straw - the last of a series of events that causes an angry or violent reaction
  • Icy - unfriendly and showing no emotion
  • Embarrass - to make someone feel nervous, ashamed, or stupid in a social situation
  • Assassinate - to kill a famous or important person, especially for political reasons or for payment
  • Entourage - a group of people who go somewhere with an important person
  • Scrambling - to hurry or try very hard to get something
  • Casualty - someone who is injured or killed in an accident or military action
  • Amidst - if something happens amid particular feelings or events, it happens while people have these feelings or while these events are happening
  • Frosty - unfriendly and showing that you do not approve of someone or something
  • Forge - to develop a successful relationship, especially in business or politics, with another country, organization, or person
  • Pluralistic - relating to a system in which two or more states, groups, principles, sources of authority, etc., coexist
  • Diverse - very different from each other
  • Diaspora - the movement of a large group of people from their home country to other countries in the world
  • Rupture - an end to a friendly relationship or to a peaceful situation
  • Fluidity - the state of being unsettled or unstable; changeability
  • Contestation - the act of arguing or disagreeing about something
  • Campaign - a series of actions intended to produce political or social change
  • In the reckoning - bein considered for a job or position
  • Unopposed - if someone does something unopposed, no one competes against them or tries to stop them
  • Constituency - the voters in a division of a country who elect a representative to parliament
  • Wrinkle - a small problem
  • Alliance - an arrangement between two or more people, groups, or countries by which they agree to work together to achieve something
  • Cropped up - to happen suddenly or unexpectedly
  • Upheaval - a sudden or violent change, especially one that affects people’s lives
  • Bipolar - involving two completely opposing parts or groups
  • Augur - to be a sign of what may happen in the future
  • Extremist - someone who has beliefs or opinions that are considered to be extremely unreasonable by most people
  • Former -  used for describing someone or something that had a particular job, title, status etc in the past, but not now
  • Coalition - a temporary union of different political parties that agree to form a government together
  • Ethnic - relating to a group of people who have the same culture and traditions
  • Spoiler - someone who spoils someone else’s performance or success in an election or competition
  • Forge - to develop a successful relationship, especially in business or politics, with another country, organization, or person
  • Long-standing - having existed for a long time
  • Sluggish - not performing or reacting as well as usual
  • Realignment - to change the position of something, especially in relation to the position of something else
