Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "Mind the perimeter: On J&K terror attacks"
  • Perimeter - the outer edge of an area of land or the border around it
  • Protocol - a set of rules for the correct way to behave on formal occasions
  • Installation - a building or structure, especially one that is important for an army, industry, or government
  • Upgrade - to improve the quality or usefulness of something
  • Casualty - someone who is injured or killed in an accident or military action
  • Garrison - a group of soldiers living in and defending a particular place
  • Brigade - a large group of soldiers, larger than a battalion
  • Infantry - soldiers who fight on foot, not on horses or in tanks or other vehicles
  • Sustain - to suffer or experience, especially damage or loss
  • Worrisome - causing you to feel worried
  • Aspect - a particular part, feature, or quality of something
  • Infiltrate - to secretly join an organization or go into a place in order to find out information about it or damage it
  • Lapse - a temporary failure
  • Vulnerability - the quality or state of easily damaged by something negative or harmful
  • Scant - very little, or not enough
  • Significant - very large or noticeable
  • Aftermath - the effects and results of something bad or important
  • Audit - a careful examination of something, especially one done to find the amount, size, or effectiveness of something
  • Fortify - to protect a place against attack by building strong walls, towers, or other structures around it
  • Substantial - large in amount or degree
  • Inquiry -  an official examination of a crime, accident, problem etc, in order to get information or the truth
  • Overhaul - to repair or improve something so that every part of it works as it should
  • Impetus - a force that helps something to happen or develop more quickly
  • Ad hoc  - done only when needed for a specific purpose, without planning or preparation
  • Lax - not paying enough attention to rules, or not caring enough about quality or safety
  • Terrain - an area of land, usually one that has a particular physical feature
  • Proximity - how near something is to another thing, especially in distance or time
  • Dwelling - a house, flat, or other shelter in which someone lives
  • Adher - to stick to something
  • Rely - to depend on or trust someone or something
  • Calibre - the level of someone’s ability, intelligence etc, or the standard or quality of something, especially when it is high
  • Holistic - thinking about the whole of something, and not just dealing with particular aspects
  • Defence -  actions that you take to protect someone or something that is being attacked
  • Holocaust - a war in which very many ordinary people are killed
  • Atrocity - a cruel and violent act, often in a war
  • Concentration camp - a place like a prison where ordinary people are kept during a war and where they have to live in very unpleasant conditions
  • Contention - disagreement between people or groups
  • Scholar - someone who studies a particular subject and knows a lot about it, especially a subject that is not scientific
  • Assuage - to make an unpleasant or painful feeling less severe
  • Critic - someone who does not like something and states their opinion about it
  • Assault - a physical attack on someone, or the crime of physically attacking someone
  • Perpetrate - to do something that is harmful, illegal, or dishonest
  • Complicity - the fact that someone is involved in or knows about something bad that happens
  • Collusion - the secret activities of people who work together to do something dishonest
  • Tantamount - to have the same bad qualities or effect as something else
  • Falsify - to change something deliberately in order to trick other people
  • Rehabilitate - to help someone who has been ill or in prison to return to a healthy, independent, and useful life
  • Liable to - likely to suffer from something unpleasant
  • Motive - the reason that you do something
  • Suppress - to stop an activity, especially by making laws or by using your authority
  • Persistent - continuing to do something in a determined way
  • Preoccupation - a state in which you think about something so much that you do not think about other things
  • Dispensation - official permission to do something that people are not normally allowed to do, especially from a religious authority
  • Predictably - in a way that can be expected
  • Stoke - to encourage bad ideas or feelings in a lot of people
  • Controversy - a disagreement, especially about a public policy or a moral issue that a lot of people have strong feelings about
  • Reverberation - an effect that spreads over a wide area or lasts for a long time
  • Collaborate with - to work with
  • Caution - to tell someone about a danger or problem that they need to know about or avoid
  • Implication - a possible effect or result
  • Scrutiny - careful examination of someone or something
  • Sanction - an official order to stop communication, trade, etc with a country that has broken international law
  • Breach - a failure to follow a law or rule
  • Deviation - a difference in the usual or expected way of doing something
  • Unprecedented - never having happened or existed before
  • Ironic - being very different from what you would usually expect:
  • Assertion - a definite statement or claim that something is true
  • Sovereignty - the right of a country to rule itself
  • Ire - anger
  • Assent - agreement with or approval of a plan or suggestion
  • Toothless - lacking the necessary power or force to be effective
  • Roll back - an occasion when the influence of particular laws, rules, etc. is reduced
  • Fruits of something - the good results that you get from something such as hard work
