  • Indonesia's Health Ministry has announced that it has listed homosexuality as a mental disorder and will publish a medical guide stating the same. 
National Current Affairs
  • The Union Government has announced Rs.1.4 lakh-crore Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahaabhiyan (KUSUM) scheme for promoting solar farming i.e. decentralised solar power production of up to 28,250 MW to help farmers. 
    • The Union Budget 2018-19 has allocated Rs. 48,000 crore for the scheme for the ten-year period.
  • The 32nd edition of Surajkund International Crafts Mela was recently held at Faridabad, Haryana.

  • Magahi writer Shesh Anand Madhukar was honoured with Sahitya Akademi Bhasha Samman Award
    • He is second writer of Magahi language to be honored with this award.
    • About Sahitya Akademi Bhasha Samman Award
    • Sahitya Akademi honours writers from 24 regional languages, but Bhasha Samman identifies those languages which are equally spoken in different parts of country. 
    • This award carries Rs. 1 lakh cheque and a memento.
  • The Odisha Government has won ‘Geospatial World Excellence Award-2018’ for successful IT application for tracking of mineral production, dispatch and value accrued on real-time basis through its i3MS web-based software.

  • The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) today inked pact with the World Bank for Jal Marg Vikas Project to enhance navigation on National Waterway-1 from Varanasi to Haldia.
  • The Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has inked Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Russian firm United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) to develop specialized vessels for Inland and Coastal shipping.

  • Japanese conglomerate SoftBank has hired Andrew Kovacs as its Global Head of Communications for its $100 billion Vision Fund. 
    • Kovacs, a Princeton University graduate has previously served US-based venture capital and private equity company Sequoia Capital as its Head of Communications and technology major Google as its Senior Manager for Communications and Public Affairs. Kovacs is also a .

  • To prevent the passage of incurable genetic diseases from mothers to offsprings, the Britain’s fertility regulator Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) has allowed doctors to create country’s first ‘Three-Parent’ Babies through Mitochondrial Donation Therapy (MRT). 
Recent Committees in News
  • The Ministry of Defence (Department of Defence Production) constituted a 17 member task force to study use and application of Artificial intelligence (AI) in military.
    • The task force will study the whole gamut of issues surrounding strategic implications of AI in national security perspective, in global context.

Sports Current Affairs
  • India defeated Australia by 8 wickets to win their ICC Under-19 World Cup
    • Important Points to Note :
    • This is the 4th time India won ICC Under-19 World Cup (2000, 2008, 2012 and 2018) the most for any nation. 
    • For the first time, an Indian was the top wicket-taker in the tournament after spinner Anukul Roy finished the 2018 edition with joint-highest 14 wickets. 
  • Luger Shiva Keshavan and cross country skier Jagdish Singh are going to represent India at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics which begins on 9th February 2018. 
  • 7 Indian boxers, including five-time world champion Mary Kom, won gold medals in the India Open International Boxing Tournament
  • Professional table tennis player of Tamil Nadu, Sharath Kamal beats top-seed Anthony Amalraj to win the Men's singles title for the 8th time, equalling the feat of Kamlesh Mehta at the 11Even Sports Senior Table Tennis Nationals in Ranchi.
