International Current Affairs
  • Today (23rd February) is World Rotary Day.
  • India is going to host the 1st International Solar Alliance (ISA) Summit in March 2018 at  New Delhi. 
    • This summit will be attended by the leaders from over 50 member countries of ISA including French President Emmanuel Macron, United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and Bangladesh President Abdul Hamid. 
    • During the summit, two new programmes On scaling solar e-mobility and storage, and On rooftop solar will be inaugurated.

  • According to recently released Global Passport Index 2018, South Korea and Singapore have the most powerful passports in the world with a visa-free score of 162.

  • India has contributed $1 million aid to Tonga for rehabilitation efforts after the Island nation was hit by Tropical Cyclone Gita which had caused massive destruction across the pacific ocean archipelago.
National Current Affairs
  • The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced that it is going to introduce a blue-coloured 'Baal Aadhaar' card for the children below the age of five years. 
    • While the Baal Aadhaar will not carry biometric details of the child, it will be updated with the information after the child crosses the age of five. 
  • The Tamil Nadu health department today launched a Cosmetic Surgery Clinic at a government hospital in Chennai to provide free breast reconstruction surgeries to the poor. 
    • Stating that "beauty treatments" should be available to everyone, state Health Minister CV Baskar said the government launched the initiative as women may use "dangerous methods" or take loans for such surgeries.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Venezuela has launched it's own crypto currency titled Petro backed by oil, gas, gold and diamond reserves to circumvent US-led financial sanctions. 
    • With this, Venezulea has become 1st sovereign country to officially launch its own cryptocurrency
  • Digital payments startup Paytm has launched 2 insurance companies, Paytm Life Insurance and Paytm General Insurance.
MOUs & Agreements
  • Madhu Mantena, co-producer of the ₹500 crore film being planned on the epic Ramayana, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Uttar Pradesh government's cinema arm Film Bandhu to support making of the film in the state. 
    • The film will reportedly be India's most expensive film to be made.
Science & Technology
  • Telecom Major Bharti Airtel and Chinese telecom equipment manufacturer Huawei today announced they have successfully conducted India's first-ever 5G trial, achieving a data speed of over 3 GB per second. 
    • Note : This comes days after state-run BSNL signed a pact with Japan's NTT AT and their Indian partner Virgo Corps to create a "5G test-bed".
  • Elon Musk-led space exploration startup SpaceX has successfully launched its Falcon 9 rocket, which carried two test satellites for its planned Global Internet Broadband Service
  • The Strategic Forces Command today successfully test-fired the nuclear-capable Dhanush ballistic missile from an Indian Navy vessel off Odisha coast.
    • The surface-to-surface missile has a 350-km range and can carry a 500-kg nuclear payload. 
    • The missile, which can attack both land and sea-based targets, has already been inducted into the defence services.
Sports Current Affairs
  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) has approved the Cricket Canada's maiden venture 'Global T20 Canada', which is going to be held in in July 2018.
  • 5-time world champion MC Mary Kom (48kg) assured herself of a 3rd successive international medal by advancing to the semifinals of the 69th Strandja Memorial Boxing Tournament.
