International Current Affairs
  • During his India visit, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has announced that his country will simplify visa norms for India so that people of India find it convenient to sustain their relationship with the people of Iran. 
MOUs & Agreements
  • During the President of Iran Hassan Rouhani's India visit, both countries have signed 9 MOUs. They are :
    • Agreement for the Avoidance of Double Taxation and the Prevention of Fiscal Evasion with respect to taxes on Income.
    • MoU on Exemption from Visa requirement for holders of Diplomatic Passports.
    • Exchange of Instrument of Ratification of Extradition Treaty.
    • Lease Contract for Shahid Beheshti Port- Phase 1 of Chabahar during Interim Period between Port and Maritime Organization (PMO), Iran and India Ports Global Limited (IPGL).
    • MoU on Cooperation in the field of Traditional Systems of Medicine.
    • MoU on the establishment of an Expert Group on Trade Remedy Measures to promote cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
    • MoU on Cooperation in the field of Agriculture and Allied Sectors.
    • MoU on Cooperation in the field of Health and Medicine.
    • MoU on Postal Cooperation.
  • Botanical Survey of India (BSI) and Natural History Museum (NHM), UK signed a Memorandum of Understanding for cooperation in the field of genetic/taxonomic studies, research and training, conservation in India, including species and habitat conservation assessments.
    • The MoU will pave the way for BSI staff to work in Natural History Museum, London and vice-versa and they will share fairly and equitably the benefits that may arise from the collection, study and conservation of the plant materials such as seeds, herbarium specimens and tissue samples and exchange associated data and images. 
  • Government has signed second Loan Agreement with New Development Bank (NDB) for financing of Rajasthan Water Sector Restructuring Project for the Desert Areas. 
    • This is the first tranche loan of $100 million was approved by the NDB under Multi Tranche Financing Facility of $345 million for this project.
Awards & Honors
  • Veteran singer Asha Bhosle was honoured with the Yash Chopra Memorial Award today.
  • The Department of Science and Technology will honor Raghbir Singh Khandpur with a national award on National Science Day (February 28) for his contribution to science and his efforts to make the Science City in Punjab’s Kapurthala into an international-level facility 
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has given consent to launch WhatsApp BHIM UPI beta with limited user base of 1 million and low per transaction limit.
  • Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) has identified 21 banks (6 Public sector banks, 14 Regional Rural Banks and 1 Cooperative Bank) as Makers of Excellence under Atal Pension Yojana (APY) Outreach Programme as the number of current APY subscribers crosses 86 Lacs mark.
    • Note : With a view to bring the economically disadvantaged section of the society in the unorganized sector within the pension fold or old age income security coverage, Government had launched the Atal Pension Yojana (APY) in May 2015. ​                   ​
New Appointments
  • Ashok Das, a 1987 batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, was today named India’s new Ambassador to Brazil.
  • Pakistan Peoples Party’s Krishna Kumari became the first female Hindu lawmaker in Pakistan since 1947.
Sports Current Affairs
  • 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer (36) has become the oldest-ever men's singles world number one tennis player. 
    • Federer surpassed eight-time Grand Slam winner Andre Agassi, who was 33 years old when he became world number one in 2003.
