  • Iran has banned the teaching of English in primary schools after the country's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said that early learning of the language could pave the way for Western "cultural invasion". 
Awards & Honors
  • 75th Golden Globe Awards
    • American actor SterlingK Brown created history by becoming 1st African-American to win Golden Globes for best actor in drama television series.
    • Black comedy crime film 'Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri' has won the Best Motion Picture Award in the drama category.
    • Frances McDormand was named Best Actress in the the drama category for the above movie. 
    • Gary Oldman won the Best Actor in the drama category for 'Darkest Hour'.

Science & Technology
  • Taiwanese multinational hardware and electronics company Acer has unveiled a laptop, Swift 7 Ultrabook, which is the world's thinnest computer with a thickness of 8.98 mm (0.35 inches).
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Finance Minister Arun Jaitley inaugurated the Platinum Jubilee (75 Years) celebrations of UCO Bank.
    • The bank was established on 6th January 1943 by Ghanshyam das Birla.
  • Paytm Payments Bank has partnered Induslnd Bank to introduce a facility to create a fixed deposit when the customer balance exceeds Rs1 lakh at the end of day.
    • Paytm Payments Bank customers can redeem their deposits instantly, anytime without paying any pre-closure or miscellaneous charges and can earn up to 6.85% annual interest.
    • If a customer becomes a senior citizen before the maturity period, the account will be auto renewed under the senior citizen scheme, thus earning higher interest.
  • Pakistan has decided to allow the Chinese yuan to be used for imports, exports and financing transactions for bilateral trade and investment activities.
  • Andhra Pradesh Grameena Vikas Bank (APGVB) operationalised its first desktop ATM in Warangal (Telangana), to facilitate customers to withdraw small amounts.
    • Desktop ATM has low power requirements and is designed to work in harsh climatic conditions. 
MOUs & Agreements
  • State Bank of India (SBI) and Nabard have signed an agreement with five NGOs in Bengal for the promotion of 2,500 Joint Liability Groups (JLGs) in select districts of the State.
    • JLGs are informal groups of 4-10 members engaged in similar economic activities and willing to jointly undertake the responsibility to repay loans taken by the group from a bank.
New Appointments
  • Political scientist Gopal Guru has been appointed as the Editor of the Economic and Political Weekly (EPW).
  • Tamil Nadu government appointed B. Rajendran as Chairperson of Real Estate Appellate Tribunal (REAT) for Tamil Nadu and Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. 
  • Government appointed AB Mathur as its representative to hold talks with United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA).
Deaths
  • India's powerlifting world champion Saksham Yadav (28) succumbed to his injuries following a road accident at Delhi-Haryana border today.
    • Yadav, who last won a world championship gold in 2017, was among six athletes travelling from Delhi to Panipat.
  • Veteran actor Shrivallabh Vyas (60), known for acting in films like 'Lagaan' and 'Sarfarosh', passed away.
  • NASA astronaut John Young (87), who became the first human to fly solo around the Moon during Apollo 10 mission in 1969, passed away.
    • Young, who flew to space six times, was the ninth man to walk on the Moon in 1972 during Apollo 16 mission and is NASA's most experienced astronaut with 42 years of service.
Sports Current Affairs
  • The 23rd Maharashtra Open 2018 was recently held at Pune, India, from 1st January to 7th January 2018. 
    • This is the only ATP tournament played in India.
    • It was the first edition of the tournament to be held after it was moved from Chennai to Pune.
