International Current Affairs
- To battle sexual harassment, 300 Hollywood celebrities including Jennifer Lawrence and Meryl Streep, have launched a campaign named 'Time's Up'.
- The campaign already raised $13 million towards a legal defense fund to help survivors of sexual harassment.
- The US state of California today legalised the sale of recreational marijuana, over 20 years after legalising its medical use.
- With this, it has become the sixth US state to do so.
- The 150-metre-high Dubai Frame has opened nearly a decade after it was first designed.
National Current Affairs
- The Rajya Sabha today created a record, completing all the issues and Special Mentions on the Zero Hour agenda for the first time.
- Kolkata is set to get its first floating market, named 'The Floating Market of Patuli', which is likely to be open for public in January.
- The Karnataka state government is going to purchase 640 electric vehicles (40 buses, 100 cars and 500 three-wheelers) under the Central government's FAME India subsidised scheme.
- The Home Ministry has declared Nagaland a "disturbed area" under Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) for six more months till June-end.
- Note : AFSPA empowers the security forces to conduct operations anywhere and arrest anyone without prior notice.
Science & Technology
- The largest state-owned natural gas processing and distribution company in India, GAIL India Ltd has commissioned India’s second largest rooftop solar power plant in Uttar Pradesh.
- It is 5.76 MWp (Mega Watt peak) solar plant installed at GAIL’s petrochemical complex at Pata in UP.
- Note : The world’s largest rooftop solar power plant of 11.5 Mw capacity was inaugurated in Amritsar (Punjab) on 19th May 2016.
New Appointments
- Senior diplomat Vijay Keshav Gokhale has been appointed Foreign Secretary for a two-year term.
- He is going to replace S Jaishankar whose tenure ends on January 28.
Deaths
- Poet Anwar Jalalpuri (71), who translated Bhagavad Gita to Urdu, passed away.
- The Yash Bharti awardee is known for his literary works like 'Rahrau se Rahnuma Tak' and translation of Rabindranath Tagore's Gitanjali.
