International Current Affairs
  • Today (28th January) is Data Privacy Day/ Data Protection Day.
    • The purpose of this day is to raise awareness and promote privacy and data protection best practices.
    • Theme of Data Privacy Day 2018 : "Respecting Privacy, Safeguarding Data and Enabling Trust"
  • Today is Anti Leprosy Day.
    • Anti Leprosy Day is observed internationally on January 30 or its nearest Sunday to increase the public awareness of the Leprosy or Hansen's Disease.
    • This day was chosen in commemoration of the death of Gandhi, who understood the importance of leprosy.
  • Pakistan was named on this day (28th January) in the year 1933.
    • Muslim nationalist Choudhry Rahmat Ali, who is also known as the Founder of Pakistan National Movement, used 'Pakistan' in his pamphlet 'Now or Never' explaining reasons to establish a separate nation.
    • 'Pakistan' referred to the five northern units of India- 'P'unjab, North-West Frontier ('A'fghan) Province, 'K'ashmir, 'S'ind, and Baluchis'tan' (PAKSTAN).
National Current Affairs
  • Today is National Immunization Day.
    • On the eve of this day, President Ram Nath Kovind launched the Pulse Polio programme 2018 by administering polio drops to children below five years of age at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. 
    • More than 17 crore children of less than five years across the country will be given polio drops as part of the government’s drive to eradicate polio from the country.
  • The Oxford Dictionaries announced 'Aadhaar' as its 2017 'Hindi Word of the Year' at the Jaipur Literature Festival today. 
    • The shortlist included words such as 'Mitron', 'Notebandi', 'Bahubali' and 'Gau-rakshak', among others.
  • Today is freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai's 153rd birth anniversary. 
    • He was popularly known as Punjab Kesari.
      He was also associated with activities of Punjab National Bank and Lakshmi Insurance Company in their early stages.
  • The Union government has approved setting up of the long-awaited Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) at Raichur (Karnataka).
    • This is 2nd IIIT in Karnataka after one in Dharwad.
  • Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur today launched 24X7 ‘Gudiya’ helpline.
    • Named after a 16-year  old rape and murder victim of Kotkhai, Gudia is used for a quick police response cases of crimes against women. 
    • The Chief Minister also launched ‘Shakti Button’- a mobile app linked to police control rooms for ensuring the safety of women in the state.

  • The documentary 'Kailash', which is about Nobel Peace Prize winner Kailash Satyarthi and his efforts to end child slavery, won the 'US Grand Jury Prize: Documentary' at the Sundance Film Festival
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Central government announced recently that the Payments banks such as Airtel payments bank and small finance banks such as Utkarsh and ESAF will also offer social security scheme, Atal Pension Yojana (APY), to their subscribers. 
    • Currently, the scheme is offered via all mainstream banks such as State Bank of India (SBI), Oriental Bank of Commerce and Bank of Baroda, among others.
    • About APY :
    • Launched in May 2015, Atal Pension Yojana (APY) is a Government of India's old age pension scheme, administered by the PFRDA, and implemented through all the banks nationwide. 
    • The scheme is applicable to all citizen of India aged between 18 to 40 years.
  • Japan has committed JICA Official Development Assistance loan for an amount of 45 billion yen (about Rs 2,587 crore) for Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Project (Phase 3).
    • Note : Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) provides various forms of aid for promoting economic and social development in developing countries.
New Appointments
  • Hemant Kumar Sharma, a 2002-batch IAS officer, has been appointed as the Divisional Commissioner of Jammu.
    • Note : This post fell vacant after the incumbent officer Mandeep Kumar Bhandari proceeded on central deputation earlier this month.
  • HARMAN International, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd, today appointed Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra as Global brand ambassador for its JBL and Harman Kardon audio brands.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Swiss professional tennis player Roger Federer became the first male tennis player to win 20 Grand Slam titles, after winning a joint-record sixth Australian Open title today. 
    • In the finals he defeated Croatia's Marin Cilic to win this title.
