  • The US today officially opened its new embassy in London which is believed to be the world's most expensive embassy
    • The embassy worths over ₹6,400 crore and is designed like a crystalline cube.
  • Indo-US joint military exercise Vajra Prahar will be held at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) in Seattle (USA) in last week of Jan 2018.
National Current Affairs
  • To tackle crimes like cyber threats, child pornography and online stalking, the government is going to set up a Cyber Warrior Police Force (CWPF).
New Appointments
  • UK PM Theresa May today appointed Tracey Crouch to look after the loneliness-related issues of people across the country. 
    • With this, Crouch will be the world's first-ever minister tasked with the portfolio of 'Loneliness'.
Science & Technology
  • China has constructed a 330-foot tall air purifying tower dubbed the "world's biggest air purifier"
    • The tower, which is being tested by researchers, has produced more than 10 million cubic meters of clean air since it was launched. 
  • Russian scientists have discovered a dinosaur species that roamed Siberia 120 million years ago named the Siberian Titan.
    • The plant-eating sauropod had a long neck and a powerful tail reaching up to 12 metres in length and weighing nearly ten tons.
  • American technology company Microsoft has topped Thomson Reuters' list of Top 100 Global Technology Leaders.
    • US-based Chipmaker Intel and computer networking company Cisco stood at 2nd and 3rd places respectively.

  • Department of Commerce signed MoU with Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for integrated development of Logistics sector
Awards & Honors
  • British-Indian sculptor Anish Kapoor was honored with Genesis Prize, dubbed the Jewish Nobel Prize for his commitment to Jewish values.
    • He has pledged this $1 million prize to five charities helping refugees worldwide. 
  • A health worker from Mandi district in Himachal Pradesh, Verma has featured in World Health Organization (WHO) calendar for 2018, for her efforts to ensure hundred per cent coverage of her area of operation under measles and rubella programme.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba-owned messaging app DingTalk unveiled an English version in India that caters to the small and medium-sized enterprises. 
    • Available on both Android and iOS operating systems, DingTalk is a communication and collaboration platform designed for enterprises. 
  • The Defence Acquisition Council, led by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, has approved the procurement of 72,000 assault rifles and around 94,000 carbines worth ₹3,500 crore on a fast-track basis. 
    • This is aimed at meeting the immediate requirement of border troops. Last year, the Army cleared ₹40,000 crore, under one of its biggest procurement plans to replace obsolete weapons.
  • Samsung India has launched a new shopping app and service, called Samsung Mall, exclusively for the Indian market. 
    • The app offers visual searching of products online and provides an interface to shop across different e-commerce sites, like Amazon and Flipkart.
Deaths
  • Veteran actress Ava Mukherjee (88), who played the role of Shah Rukh Khan's grandmother in the 2002 film 'Devdas', passed away. 
    • She made her acting debut in films with the 1966 Bengali film 'Ram Dhakka'.
    • The actress is also known for her roles in 'Detective Naani', 'Darna Zaroori Hai' and 'The Firm Land'.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Brazilian legend and 2002 World Cup winner Ronaldinho announced his retirement from football. 
    • The 37-year-old, widely known for his creativity, dribbling skills, and the 'elastico' move, won the UEFA Champions League and the Ballon d'Or award as a Barcelona player.
  • North Korea and South Korea have agreed to march together under a unified Korea flag at the upcoming Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang, South Korea. 
    • Both the nations have also agreed to send a unified women's hockey team for the Games.
