International Current Affairs
  • Indian External Affairs Minister (EAM) Sushma Swaraj and Bhutan's Minister of Foreign Affairs Lyonpo Damcho Dorji today jointly unveiled the 'Special logo' for the 50 years of diplomatic relations (Golden Jubilee)
MOUs & Agreements
  • Minister for Information Technology, Ravi Shankar Prasad is on a visit to Sri Lanka.
    • During this Visit, India and Sri Lanka signed the following agreements
      • Collaboration in Information and communication technology (ICT) sector
      • Connecting National Knowledge network (NKN) for collaboration among universities and academics
      • Setting up of e-office system.
  • Football Delhi (earlier Delhi Soccer Association) signed a MoU with ASSOCHAM (Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India) for the development of the sport in the capital city.
    • As per the MoU, ASSOCHAM and Football Delhi will jointly form a task force to periodically review the progress made and take necessary steps.
    • Under the MOU, emphasis will be given to grassroot level participation through jointly- organised events, seminars and forums.
National Current Affairs
  • Today (15th January) is 70th Indian Army Day.
    • It was on this day in 1949 when Lt. General (later Field Marshal) KM Cariappa became the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army post Independence.
      • This day inspires the troops to continue to enrich the glorious traditions of the Indian Army with their dedication and sacrifice.
    • This Day also marks a day to salute the valiant soldiers who sacrificed their lives to protect the country and the people living in it.

    • Air Chief Marshal - Birender Singh Dhanoa
  • The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) today announced the introduction of Face authentication feature for Aadhaar users by July 1, 2018. 
    • This feature will help all elderly or others facing issues with fingerprint authentication, the UIDAI said. 
    • The feature must be combined with either fingerprint, iris scan, or OTP for successful authentication of an Aadhaar number.
  • The Petroleum Conservation Research Association (PCRA) under Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas has launched a month long annual flagship event titled Saksham 2018 (Sanrakshan Kshamta Mahotsav).
    • Aim of Saksham 2018 : Creating focused attention on fuel conservation through people centric activities and sensitize masses about efficient use of petroleum products.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • With USD 1.5 billion worth of loans in 2017, India become top borrower from Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).
    • Indonesia stood at second spot with USD 600 million worth loans.
  • Idea Cellular and Vodafone India will start operating as a merged entity from April this year. 
    • The two companies now require the Department of Telecommunications' approval to proceed with the merger. 
    • Note : The merged entity will create India's largest telecom operator, having almost 400 million customers with 35% customer share and 41% revenue market share.
  • The government is going to invite fresh applications for the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) Deputy Governor post although interviews were conducted last year.
    • The position remained vacant after SS Mundra retired after his three-year term on July 31, 2017. 
    • Note : The RBI has four Deputy Governors– two from within the organisation, an economist, and a commercial banker.
  • Kazakhstan has overtaken Iraq to become the biggest over-producer in the pact between OPEC and its allies to curb oil output.

Science & Technology
  • China has set up world’s first 3D-printed bus stops in Fengjing (Shanghai). 
    • The bus stops have a closed loop design, accommodating two-round stools inside the structure.
New Appointments
  • Bollywood Actress Kajol, an active supporter of eradicating preventable deaths from hygiene-related issues, has become an Advocacy Ambassador for a Swachh Aadat Swachh Bharat initiative.
Deaths
  • Former Union Minister Raghunath Jha (78) passed away.
    • He served as the Union Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprise under the leadership of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. 
    • He represented Bihar's Bettiah constituency in the 14th Lok Sabha.
  • Dan Gurney (86) , the first driver with wins in each of the Formula One, IndyCar and NASCAR Cup series, died today. 
    • Gurney raced for Porsche, Ferrari, BRM, and Brabham in F1 before creating his own team. 
Books & Authors
  • The former international cricketer, Mumbai captain and now television commentator and columnist, Sanjay Manjrekar has released his autobiography titled "Imperfect"
    • The 52-year-old had played 37 Test matches for India between 1987 and 1996.
