National Current Affairs
  • Amid the controversy over a data breach, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced a 'Virtual ID'.
    • The Aadhaar-card holder can generate these temporary 16-digit Virtual IDs from UIDAI's website and give it for various purposes, wherever Aadhaar number is necessary to provide.
  • The Union Cabinet has decided to fix three-year term of Chairperson and the Members of the board of the National Trust, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
MOUs & Agreements
  • The Union Cabinet approved Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Canada for cooperation in field of Science & Technology. 
    • The MoU was signed by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) with Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) of Canada.
Science & Technology
  • The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has commissioned Charlie-435, a state-of-the-art patrol vessel at Karaikal in the Union Territory of Puducherry. 
    • With commissioning of Charlie-435, the Coast Guard station at Karaikal now has five vessels.
  • The South Australian government has approved a proposal of a US-based company to build the world's largest solar-thermal power plant in the Australian state. 
    • The 150-megawatt plant which worths over ₹3,200 crore, will create 650 construction jobs and 50 ongoing positions when completed.
    • The facility will power 90,000 homes with eight hours of full load storage.

  • West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee today received an honorary Doctorate of Literature (DLitt) from the Calcutta University
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Indian Banks' Association (IBA) has announced that there is no proposal to discontinue free banking services and asked people not to pay heed to 'baseless rumours'.
    • This comes after reports that public sector banks will cease free services from January 20. 
  • US imaging firm Eastman Kodak today announced its cryptocurrency KODAKCoin
    • It also announced a blockchain-powered image rights platform KODAKOne which creates a digital ledger of rights ownership that photographers can use to register and license their work. 
  • The Indian government's four mints have halted coin production as of January 8 owing to excess coins at the mints.
    • Over 250 crore pieces of manufactured coins in the storage rooms are waiting to be picked up by the RBI. 
    • The discontinuation of minting will have no effect on the circulation as there is no shortage of coins.
New Appointments
  • Singapore-based Indian-origin businessman Sunny Verghese has been appointed as the Chairman of the Geneva-based World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).
  • UK Prime Minister Theresa May has inducted Rishi Sunak, an Indian-origin lawmaker and the son-in-law of Infosys Co-founder Narayana Murthy, into her government. 
    • Sunak has been appointed as the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. 
  • The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) today appointed Harjinder Singh as the Chef De Mission for the 23rd Winter Olympic Games to be held in Pyeongchang next month. 
  • JK Tyre & Industries, tyre major and leaders of radial tyres in India, has appointed Rajiv Prasad as its President (India Operations).
