The Time magazine has named The Silence Breakers who revealed the pervasiveness of sexual harassment and assault across various industries using the #MeToo movement - as the prestegious Times Person of the Year 2017. The anti-harassment #MeToo social movement aimed at raising awareness about sexual harassment and assault round the year.

US President Donald Trump, who was Time’s person of the year in 2016, was the first runner-up this year, followed by Chinese President Xi Jinping. Other finalists included US Department of Justice Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is leading the investigation of alleged Russian meddling in the election that Trump won; North Korean President Kim Jong Un; “Wonder Woman” director Patty Jenkins; and football player-turned-activist Colin Kaepernick.

About Time Person of the year

Every December, TIME features and profiles a person, a group, an idea, or an object that "for better or for worse... has done the most to influence the events of the year" as the person of the year. Last year US President Donald J Trump was Time’s ‘Person of the Year’. The Person of the Year is picked by Time editors from among world leaders, artists, corporate czars and organisations who most influenced the news, for better or for worse. Donald Trump has been chosen for last year's honor for his stunning victory in the US Polls.

About #MeToo movement

The #MeToo hashtag spread virally in October 2017 to denounce sexual assault and harassment, in the wake of sexual misconduct allegations against film producer and executive Harvey Weinstein.

The phrase was first used by social activist Tarana Burke back in 2006 as part of an effort to build solidarity among survivors of harassment and assault. This was brought into the forefront by American actress Alyssa Milano when she tweeted out the moving cry  – “If you’ve been sexually harassed or assaulted write ‘me too’ as a reply to this tweet” – October 15.

Since then, millions of people have used the hashtag to come forward with their experiences, including many celebrities.  These “Silence Breakers” played a seminal role to reveal the pervasiveness of sexual harassment and assault in the world of cinema.

The #MeToo movement, became an outcry against sexual harassment sans boundaries – be it of country, class, race and even gender.  Not only celebrities, but people across the world responded to the call.
