  • Criterion - a standard that is used for judging something or for making a decision about something
  • Incumbent - someone who has an official position
  • Concede - to admit that something is true
  • Wrest - to get land, power, or possessions from someone, usually by fighting
  • Contender - someone who competes with other people for a prize or job
  • Deputy - someone whose job is the second most important in a department or organization
  • Allegiance - strong loyalty to a person, group, idea, or country
  • Campaign - a series of actions intended to produce political or social change
  • Claim - to say that something is true, even though there is no definite proof
  • Groundwork - work that you do in order to prepare for something
  • Disaffection - the state of no longer feeling loyal towards a group or organization
  • Despite - used for saying that something happens even though something else might have prevented it
  • Out of contention - not able to achieve or win something
  • Vacate - to leave a room, seat, or house so that it is available for someone else to use
  • Opt for - to make a choice or decision from a range of possibilities
  • Evidently - used for saying that something is obvious
  • Interprete - to understand an action, situation etc in a particular way
  • Detractor - someone who publicly criticizes someone or something
  • Verdict - an opinion that you have or a decision that you make
  • Constituency - a division of a country that elects a representative to a parliament
  • Ideological - related to a set of beliefs or principles, especially one on which a political system, party, or organization is based
  • Mentor - an experienced person who helps someone who has less experience, especially in their job
  • Endorsement - an occasion when someone gives official or public support to a particular person or thing
  • Pro-active - taking action and making changes before they need to be made, rather than waiting until problems develop
  • Backing - supporting
  • Likely - probably going to happen, or probably true
  • Freer - free
  • Incumbency - an official position
  • Retaining - to keep or continue to have something
  • Re-gaining -  to get something again that you lost

  • Sanction - an official order to stop communication, trade, etc with a country that has broken international law
  • Diplomacy - the profession, activity, or skill of managing international relations
  • Disarmament - a process by which a country reduces or gets rid of its weapons or armed forces
  • Impose - to introduce something such as a new law or new system, and force people to accept it
  • Unanimously - without opposition; with the agreement of all people involved
  • Predictable - if something is predictable, it happens in the way that you would expect
  • Mounting - increasing, especially in a way that makes a situation worse
  • Stand-off - a disagreement or fight in which neither opponent can do anything to win or achieve their aim
  • Echoing - repeating
  • Suspicion - a feeling that someone has done something wrong
  • Refined - a natural substance that is refined is now pure because other things have been removed from it
  • Import - a product from another country, that is bought with money from your country
  • Expulsion - an occasion when someone is officially forced to leave an organization or activity permanently because of their bad behaviour
  • Crippling - causing severe damage or problems
  • Imbroglio - a difficult, complicated, or embarrassing situation
  • Destabilising - to cause problems for a country, government, or person in authority so that they become less effective
  • Counterproductive - having the opposite result to the one you intended
  • Impact - an effect, or an influence
  • Ballistic missile - a missile with a high, arching trajectory, which is initially powered and guided but falls under gravity on to its target
  • Sophisticated - complicated and advanced in design
  • Regime - a government that controls a country, especially in a strict or unfair way
  • Warhead - the front part of a bomb or missile that explodes
  • Concern - a feeling of worry about something, especially one that a lot of people have about an important issue
  • Exert -  to use influence, authority, or power in order to affect or achieve something
  • Regime - a system of rules that control something
  • Negotiation - formal discussions in which people or groups try to reach an agreement, especially in a business or political situation
  • Detonate - to explode, or to make something such as a bomb explode
  • Assertion - a definite statement or claim that something is true
  • Revival - the process of becoming active, successful, or popular again
  • Scathing - criticizing someone or something in a very strong way
  • Compliance - the practice of obeying a law, rule, or request
  • Distrust - to not trust someone or something
  • Redouble - to make something much more than before; to increase something
  • Abolition - the official end to a law, system, practice etc
  • Lobby - to try to persuade a politician, the government, or an official group that a particular thing should or should not happen, or that a law should be changed
