National Current Affairs
  • The Lok Sabha passed the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill 2017.
    • This bill criminalises the instant Triple Talaq.  
  • About Instat Triple Talaq :
    • Talaq / Divorce in Islam is of 3 types. They are, Talaq-e-Ahsan,  Talaq-e-Hassan and Talaq-e-Biddat. 
    • Talaq-e-Ahsan : The husband gives talaq to wife (in a single sentence). Once the husband pronounces talaq, there has to be a three-month iddat period to factor in three menstrual cycles of the woman. This time is meant for reconciliation and arbitration. During this period, if any kind cohabitation occurs, the talaq is considered to have been revoked. 
    • Talaq-e-Hassan : There must be 3 successive pronouncements of talaq, but three pronouncements are to be made in 3 successive tuhrs (in case of menstruating women) or consecutive intervals of 30 days (in case of non-menstruating women). It can be revoked anytime before the third pronouncement
    • Talaq-e-Biddat / Instant Triple Talaq : Allows men to pronounce talaq thrice in one sitting, sometimes scrawled in a written talaqnama, or even by phone or text message. Thereafter, even if the man himself perceives his decision to have been hasty in hindsight, the divorce remains irrevocable.
New Appointments
  • The former football star George Weah has won Liberia’s presidential election, defeating the vice-president, Joseph Boakai, in a runoff with 61.5% of the vote. 
    • He will succeed Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, who was Africa's first elected female president.
Science & Technology
  • The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is designing a Space Telescope which would be able to image a sky area 100 times larger than the Hubble Space Telescope. 
    • Scheduled to launch in mid-2020s, the 300-megapixel Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) would study how the universe expanded over time.
  • China today opened its first highway with built-in wireless charging systems for electric vehicles in the country's Shandong province.
    • The one-kilometre-long road contains over 10,000 photovoltaic panels that convert sunlight into electricity. 
    • Important Points to Note
    • With this China has become the world's second country to construct a photovoltaic highway.
    • France was fist country to introduce a road fitted with solar panels in 2016.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The World Bank today committed $40 million (over ₹256 crore) for the development of tourism facilities in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.
  • Under it's FAME India scheme, the government is going to provide ₹437 crore subsidy to 11 cities for launching electric buses, taxis and three-wheelers.
    • The beneficiary cities include Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, among others.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Indian chess grandmaster, a former World Chess Champion, Viswanathan Anand defeated  Russia's Vladimir Fedoseev in a three-way tie-break to win the World Rapid Chess Championship in Riyadh today. 
  • Delhi captain Rishabh Pant, aged 20 years and 86 days, became the youngest captain to lead a side in the Ranji final after taking the field against Vidarbha today. 
    • With this he overtook the 22-year-old record held by Sachin Tendulkar, who was 21 years and 337 days old on first day of the 1995 Ranji final between Mumbai and Punjab.
  • Haryana shooter Anisa Sayyed won the women's 25m pistol gold with a new finals national record at the 61st National Shooting Championship Competitions.
