National Current Affairs

  • President Ram Nath Kovind today inaugurated Andhra Pradesh Fibre Grid project, aimed at providing affordable high-speed internet service to every household in the state at a nominal rate.
  • The government has exempted children up to the age of five years from giving their biometrics to the passport issuing authority.
  • To make employees reach early so that people don't have to wait to get their work done, the Assam government has altered the office timings for its staff from 10 am to 5 pm to 9.30 am to 5 pm. 
    • The new timings will be followed January 1, 2018, onwards. 
  • The Parliament today passed The Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy (IIPE) Bill, 2017 to establish the IIPE at Vishakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh).
  • Gujarat's Chief Minister Vijay Rupani inaugurated the 25th edition of National Children Science Congress (NCSC-2017).
    • The NCSC 2017 is being held at Gandhinagar (Gujarat) from 27th to 31st December 2017.  
    • Theme of NCSC 2017 : ‘Science and Innovation for Sustainable Development
Books & Authors
  • Vice President Venkaiah Naidu released a book titled “Yuga Purush Bharata Ratna Atal Ji” about India's former and 10th Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
    • This book has been authored by the Member of Parliament (LS), Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’.
Science & Technology
  • India's indigenously developed supersonic Advanced Air Defence (AAD) interceptor successfully destroyed an incoming hostile Prithvi missile over the Bay of Bengal during its third test-fire this year today.
    • The interceptor, positioned at Abdul Kalam Island in the Bay of Bengal, destroyed the target at a 30-kilometre altitude. 
  • The Lisa operating system, designed for the Apple Lisa computer, will be made available for free from 2018 by US-based Computer History Museum. 
    • Lisa, first released in 1983, was Apple's first product with an internal hard drive and featured a graphical user interface. 
    • Note : This Operating System was named after Steve Jobs' oldest daughter 'Lisa',
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has approved the establishment of Punjab Startup Hub to implement the state's industrial policy. 
    • The state government has proposed a state-of-the-art incubation centre in Mohali city, which will cater to hardware and manufacturing startups among others. 
  • The government today cut the interest rate on small savings schemes, such as Public Provident Fund (PPF) and National Savings Certificate (NSC), by 0.2 percentage points for the January-March quarter. 
    • PPF and NSC will now fetch a lower annual rate of 7.6%.
New Appointments
  • Zimbabwe's President Emmerson Mnangagwa today appointed the country's ex-Army chief Constantino Chiwenga as one of his two Vice Presidents. 
    • Note : Zimbabwe's ex-State Security Minister Kembo Mohadi was appointed as the other Vice President.
  • Senior IPS officer Abhay has been appointed as the new Director General of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).
    • The post was lying vacant after R R Bhatnagar took over as DG of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in April this year.
