International Current Affairs
  • Today (20th December) is International Human Solidarity Day.
    • This day is observed to celebrate unity in diversity. 
    • The UN General Assembly, on 22 December 2005, by resolution 60/209 identified solidarity as one of the fundamental and universal values that should underlie relations between peoples in the Twenty-first century, and in that regard decided to proclaim 20 December of each year International Human Solidarity Day.
    • This day also aims to remind people on the importance of solidarity in working towards eradicating poverty.
  • France has passed a law banning all exploration and production of oil and natural gas by 2040 within the country and its overseas territories.
    • This law aims to fulfil France's commitments under the Paris climate agreement to curb global warming.  
    • Note : This is world's first such ban. 
  • According to a recently released UN report on international migration, the World migrant population has risen to 25.8 crore, an increase of 49% since 2000. 
National Current Affairs
  • The Union government has allocated ₹31 crore for the construction of a Mahabharata-themed museum at Haryana's Kurukshetra under the Swadesh Darshan Scheme. 
    • The museum, spread across 19 acres of land in Jyotisar village, is expected to be completed within a year. 
  • The Southern Command of Indian Army is conducting a major army exercise ‘Hamesha Vijayee’ in deserts of Rajasthan.
    • Aim of Hamesh VIjayee : To evaluate capability of armed forces to strike deep into enemy territory in an integrated air-land battle.
  • Padma Shri awardee Sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik along with Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and the Human Resource Development Ministry are going to launch the world's first online certificate course on Sand Art in March 2018.  
  • The Maharashtra state government has amended the Maharashtra Shops and Establishments Act.
    • With this, shops and establishments in Maharashtra can remain open and operate round the clock in three shifts. 
    • Note : This act covers hotels, restaurants, and malls, but excludes bars, pubs, wine shops, and discotheques. 
  • The Rajya Sabha toay passed Indian Institutes of Management Bill granting greater autonomy to Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and declaring them institutes of national importance. 
    • This bill empowers the existing IIMs to grant degrees, and extends more autonomy to their executive body in the functioning of the institutes, including decisions on the Director's appointment and pay.
Science & Technology
  • The legwork on India's first undersea tunnel for Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor has begun in Mumbai. 
    • The 508-km-long rail project is expected to complete by August 15, 2022.

  • A photo of an orangutan crossing a river in Indonesia, captured by Jayaprakash Joghee Bojan of Singapore has won the 2017 National Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year award carrying a $10,000 cash prize. 
  • Varun Dhawan won the Best Actor award for 'Badrinath Ki Dulhania' and Sridevi was named the Best Actress for 'Mom' at Zee Cine Awards 2018. Here is the Complete winners list.

Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Saudi Arabia today announced its largest-ever budget of $261 billion for 2018, higher than its 2017 budget of $250 billion. 
    • The country projects that it will earn around $209 billion in revenue in 2018. 
  • The Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) of Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has accorded environmental clearance for Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP) in Telangana.
    • The project is to build at estimated to cost about Rs. 80,499.7 crore and proposed to be completed in three years. 
    • Important Note : Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP) is the costliest irrigation project to be taken up by any state in the country.
  • China today announced plans to set up the world's biggest carbon market in a move aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
    • As many as 1,700 companies would be part of the market initially, where they would trade credits for the right to emit greenhouse gases. 
  • The Parliament has passed Companies (Amendment) Bill, 2017 to strengthen corporate governance standards, initiate strict action against defaulting companies and help improve ease of doing business in the country,
    • This bill provides for more than 40 amendments to Companies Act, 2013 and will help in simplifying procedures, make compliance easy and take stringent action against defaulting companies.
  • The National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog is planning to set up Methanol Economy Fund worth Rs 4,000-5,000 crore to promote production and use of the clean fuel.
    • The fund will be utilized for generation of cheaper, safer and pollution free methanol fuel by converting high ash content coal and stranded gas assets into methanol.
    Books & Authors
    • American comic book publisher DC Comics is going to release a new graphic novel titled 'I Am Gandhi: A Graphic Biography of a Hero' in May 2018. 
      • The novel has been written by Brad Meltzer and illustrated by over 20 artists. 
      • Note : Meltzer is known for his work in Justice League of America comic book series, Green Arrow series, among others.
    Sports Current Affairs
    • Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has received awards for the best player and top scorer in La Liga for the 2016/17 season.
