International Current Affairs
  • Today (1st December) is World AIDS Day.
    • This day is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection, and mourning those who have died of the disease.
    • Theme of World Aids Day 2017 :  "Right to health"
    • Important Note :
      • World AIDS Day is one of the eight official global public health campaigns marked by the World Health Organization (WHO).

  • Ex-US President Barack Obama arrived in India for the first time since leaving White House this year. 
    • Note : Obama is the only US President to visit India twice while holding office.
  • The High Level Inter-Governmental Mid-Point review meeting of Asia and Pacific Decade for Persons with Disabilities, 2013-2022 was held in Beijing, China.
    • Indian delegation was led by Union Minister of Social Justice & Empowerment Thaawarchand Gehlot.
MOUs & Agreements
  • India and United Kingdom (UK) will soon sign Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Urban Transport sector for cooperation in policy planning, technology transfer and institutional organisation.
  • India and Italy have signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for enhanced cooperation in health sector
    • The objective of MoU is to establish comprehensive inter-ministerial and inter-institutional cooperation between two countries in the field of health by pooling scientific, technical, financial and human resources.
National Current Affairs
  • The 52nd Raising Day of Border Security Force (BSF) is being observed today. 
    • The Border Security Force was formed on this day in the year 1965.
  • Nagaland is celebrating 54th statehood day.  
    • Note : It was on this day in 1963 that Nagaland became the 16th state of India.
  • Maharashtra has been the most corrupt state in India for three years in a row, as per National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data. 
    • Odisha was placed second followed by Kerala.
  • The Union Ministry of Power launched Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana (SAUBHAGYA) in Manipur
    • Total of approximately 1.75 lakh households (1.62 lakh rural households and 0.13 lakh urban households) of Manipur are proposed to be included under scheme.
Deaths
  • Eminent exponent of Gwalior gharana of Hindustani classical music, Pandit Narayanrao Bodas (84), passed away.
Awards & Honors
  • Bollywood Actors Salman Khan and Priyanka Chopra have featured on American magazine Variety's list of 500 most influential business leaders in the entertainment industry.
    • They are the only actors from India who have made it to the list. Other Indian personalities who have featured on this year's list include Karan Johar, Aditya Chopra, Ekta Kapoor and Siddharth Roy Kapur.
  • Hello Kitty and Pokemon's Pikachu have been named Cultural ambassadors for the Japanese city of Osaka.
    • The move is aimed at winning the bid for hosting the World Expo 2025, which is held every five years. 
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has said GST Council could consider merging slabs of 12% and 18%, and cutting the number of items taxed at 28%. 
    • Earlier, GST on 178 goods was reduced to 18% from 28%, leaving only 50 items in the highest slab.
  • Multi-lateral funding agency Asian Development Bank (ADB) announced that it increase annual funding to India to up to $4 billion from existing $2.7 billion from next year to accelerate inclusive economic transformation.
