International Current Affairs
  • Today (17th December) is International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers.
    • This day calls attention to hate crimes committed against sex workers worldwide, as well as the need to remove the social stigma and discrimination that have contributed to violence against sex workers and indifference from the communities they are part of.
  • The World Health Organization has declared Gabon a "polio-free country," given the lack of new reported or suspected cases in the central African country.

  • The 4th India-Australia-Japan Trilateral Dialogue was recently held at New Delhi
    • This dialogue was hosted by India’s Foreign Secretary Dr. S. Jaishankar, Australia’s Secretary of Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Frances Adamson and Japan’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Shinsuke J. Sugiyama
  • The 8th edition of India, Maldives bilateral military exercise EKUVERIN 2017 was held at Belagavi, Karnataka. 
    • Aim of EKUVERIN 2017 : To conduct military training between armies of India, Maldives with emphasis on counter insurgency, counter terrorism operations (CICT Ops).
    • Note : Ekuverin means 'Friends' in Maldivian language.
MOUs & Agreements
  • India and Morocco have signed 4 agreements. They are :
    • MoU on cooperation in the field of Water Resources;
    • MOU on cooperation between Indian Maritime University (IMU) and Higher Institute of Maritime Studies (ISEM) of Morocco.
    • Framework Agreement for Cooperation in Training between National Ports Agency (NPA) of Morocco and Indian Maritime University (IMU).
    • Cooperation Framework Agreement between Institute of Training in Engines and Road Maintenance of Morocco (IFEER) and Indian Academy of Highway Engineers (IAHE).
National Current Affairs
  • The Jokapatha village, located in Chhattisgarh's Balrampur district, has received electricity connection for the first time since independence. 
  • Meghalaya became first state in country to operationalize The Meghalaya Community Participation and Public Services Social Audit Act, 2017, a law that makes social audit of government programmes and schemes a part of government practice. 
  • The Union Cabinet approved the establishment of International Training Centre for Operational Oceanography (ITCOO), as a Category-2 Centre (C2C) of UNESCO, in Hyderabad, Telangana.
    • The Centre will provide assistance in areas of capacity building and training, knowledge sharing and exchange of information, and hence could represent a valuable resource for UNESCO and its Intergovernmental Oceanography Commission (IOC) by enhancing the impact and visibility of UNESCO’s action.
  • The National Green Tribunal (NGT) imposed complete blanket ban on use, sale, purchase and storage of plastic items such as carry bags, plates and spoons in towns of Haridwar and Rishikesh till upper areas of Uttarkashi along the Ganga River in Uttarakhand.
    • The move was taken to tackle and prevent pollution of the Ganga. 
  • The cabinet approved the introduction of new central sector scheme of North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS) from 2017-18 with 100 percent funding from the central government.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a penalty of ₹5 crore on Syndicate Bank for violating the directions issued on cheque purchase, bill discounting, and Know Your Customer (KYC) norms. 
    • Earlier, RBI had penalised Union Bank ₹3 crore for non-compliance of KYC norms.
  • The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) barrred Bharti Airtel and Airtel Payments Bank from conducting Aadhaar-based SIM verification using eKYC process.
    • The action follows allegations of Bharti Airtel using the Aadhaar-eKYC based SIM verification process to open payments bank accounts of its subscribers without their 'informed consent'. 
Awards & Honors
  • Indian actress Rekha  received the first Smita Patil Memorial Award for the year 2017.
    • She was conferred the award for her contribution in the field of cinema.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu settled for a Silver at the year-ending World Superseries Finals in Dubai today. 
    • In the finals she lost the gold medal to Akane Yamaguchi (Japan).
    • Sindhu has already won 3 titles this year, namely Syed Modi International, India Open and Korea Open.
