International Current Affairs
  • Today (15th December) is International Tea Day.
    • This day aims to draw global attention of governments and citizens to the impact of the global tea trade on workers, small growers and consumers.
    • Note : The first International Tea Day was celebrated in New Delhi on 15 December 2005.
  • China's Navy today began a 4-day live-fire drill off the coast of North Korea amid increased military activity in the region. 
    • Note : The US, South Korea, and Japan recently held a joint military exercise against North Korea's nuclear programme. 
  • Norway became the world's first country to shut down national broadcasts of its FM network by completing its transition to digital radio. 
    • The transition will allow for better sound quality, a greater number of channels and more functions, at a cost eight times lower than FM radio.
National Current Affairs
  • The 7th International Ground Water Conference (IGWC-2017) was recently held at New Delhi. 
  • Theme of IGWC 2017 : “Ground water Vision 2030- Water Security, Challenges and Climate Change Adaptation”.
  • To make the practice of "instant" triple talaq an offence, Union Cabinet today cleared the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2017.
    • According to the draft bill sent out to states earlier this month, it was proposed that triple talaq be made a cognisable and non-bailable offence that would attract a jail term of three years.
  • This year's Winter Session of the Parliament, scheduled to begin today, and end on 5th January 2018 has only 14 proposed sittings. 
    • As per government data available, 14 sittings is the lowest for any winter session since 1999. 
    • As many as 25 pending bills and 14 new ones are expected to be taken up in this session. 
  • The Aadivasi Mahotsav 2017 was recently held in Raipur, Chhattisgarh to display the rich and diverse tribal traditions of the central state. 
    • It was inaugurated by Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram and Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Dr Raman Singh.
MOUs & Agreements
  • The Andhra Pradesh government has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National University of Singapore to collaborate on various aspects of governance. 
    • They will work on strengthening knowledge and practices of governance and public administration, independent audit of real-time monitoring system and key performance indicators and master plan on ease of doing business.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • India's state-run Corporation Bank has announced that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed certain restrictions on the bank to carry out banking activities as its share of bad loans rose sharply. 
    • Corporation Bank's net non-performing loans crossed 10% and it reported losses of ₹1,035 crore in September quarter.
  • The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has proposed that ATMs shouldn't be replenished with cash after 9 pm in cities, 6 pm in rural areas, and 4 pm in Maoist-affected districts, over attacks on the vans. 
    • It further suggested training two armed guards and a driver in each van to "disengage with the situation and drive vehicle to safety."
  • The US has unveiled its new embassy in London which is believed to be the world's most expensive embassy
    • The structure which is worth over ₹6,400 crore ($1 billion) has been designed like a crystalline cube without visible walls. 
  • India’s first Electronic Manufacturing Cluster (EMC) will be coming to Andhra Pradesh
    • Note : EMC has been designed and developed for providing facilities and amenities for manufacturing mobiles and allied products.
Awards & Honors
  • Jitesh Singh Deo from Lucknow was declared the winner of the 2017 Mr India pageant which was held today. 
    • Former India Under-23 footballer Prathamesh Maulingkar won the title of Mr India Supranational and will compete at Mr Supranational 2018. 
    • Abhi Khajuria was declared the first-runner up while Pavan Rao was the second runner-up. 
    • Bollywood Actress Kangana Ranaut felicitated the winners.
  • Rajkummar Rao starrer 'Newton', India's official entry to Oscars 2018, has failed to make it to the Best Foreign Language Film category's new shortlist for the 90th Academy Awards. 
  • In a first, the 24th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be presented entirely by women, announced the organisers today. 
    • Actress Kristen Bell as the first ever host of the award ceremony.
Sports Current Affairs
  • Indian shuttler PV Sindhu reached the semi-final of the year-ending Dubai World Superseries Finals by defeating Japan's Sayaka Sato.
  • The Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports will soon launch Khelo India programme for period 2017-18 to 2019-20 at cost of Rs 1756 crore.
    • Aim of Khelo India Programme Mainstreaming sports as tool for individual development, community development, economic development and national development.
