International Current Affairs
  • Today (10th November) is World Science Day for Peace and Development (WSDPD) / World Science Day.
    • This day is annually observed on November 10 to raise awareness of the benefits of science worldwide.
    • World Science Day for Peace and Development 2017 Theme : 'Science for Global Understanding'.
  • PM Narendra Modi along with Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee today flagged a new train service between Kolkata and Bangladesh
    • The passenger train, named Bandhan Express, was launched by the three leaders via video-conferencing.
  • India was re-elected as member of executive board of United Nations educational, scientific and cultural organization (UNESCO)
    • Note : Executive board is UNESCO’s top decision-making body.  .
  • The Syrian Army today declared victory over the Islamic State militant group after it captured the jihadists' last stronghold Abu Kamal. 
    • The jihadist group had seized large parts of Syria in 2014 and proclaimed a "caliphate".
National Current Affairs
  • Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao today declared Urdu as the state's second official language
  • Kerala government today launched the 'She Pad' scheme to provide free sanitary napkins, storage spaces, and environment friendly incinerators at all government and aided schools. 
    • The scheme would benefit girls of classes 6 to 12 in Kerala and would be implemented in 300 schools across 114 panchayats this year. 
    • Aim of this Scheme : To ensure 'menstrual hygiene' among girls.
  • The Delhi government today announced that the odd-even scheme will be reintroduced in the national capital from November 13 to November 17. 
    • This comes after the Indian Medical Association declared a state of public health emergency in Delhi. 
  • The second meeting of Island Development Agency (IDA) was recently held in New Delhi
    • The meeting was chaired by Rajnath Singh
  • It reviewed concept development plans and detailed master plans for holistic development of 9 islands namely Smith, Ross, Long, Avis, Minicoy, Bangaram, Thinnakara, Cheriyam, Suheli.
Recent Committees in News
  • The Environment Ministry today formed a 7-member committee, in order to formulate short and long-term plans to solve the problem of air pollution in the Delhi-NCR region
    • The panel will be headed by environment secretary and will monitor the implementation status of measures taken for tackling the problem and will meet at regular intervals to chart future course of action.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has directed banks to provide doorstep banking to senior citizens of over 70 years of age and differently-abled people by December 31. 
    • These services including pick-up and delivery of cash, and cheque books.
  • The government has raised the maximum amount that a Central government employee can borrow from the government for house-building to ₹25 lakh from the earlier ₹7.5 lakh. 
    • The interest rate on the loan amount shall be at a uniform rate of 8.5% at simple interest, in place of the earlier four slabs of interest rates ranging from 6% to 9.5%.
  • Banks need to have a board with IT expertise to ensure speedy implementation of measures to address the challenges of cyber threats, RBI's Executive Director Meena Hemchandra said. 
    • She said banks need to be prompt in sharing any breach in cyber security to authorities and regulators. 
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has simplified Foreign Exchange Management (Transfer or Issue of Security by a Person Resident outside India) Regulations to make it easier for foreign investors to invest in the country.
    • The new regulation combines earlier two regulations on foreign investments, namely FEMA 20 (investment in Indian company or partnership or in a limited liability partnership) or FEMA 24 (investment in a partnership firm).

  • Swiss tennis star Roger Federer was given the Comeback Player of the Year, the Fans' Favourite and the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award at the ATP year-end World Tour Awards
    • Note : This was the 15th straight year when Federer was awarded the Fans' Favourite Award. 
Sports Current Affairs
  • Indian para shooters Deepender Singh and Manish Narwal won Gold and Silver respectively in the P1 10m Air Pistol SH1 category in the Shooting Para Sport World Cup
  • Sports Ministry has included former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag and domestic cricketer Vinay Lamba in their Anti-Doping Appeals Panel
    • Important Points to Note
      • It is for the first time that cricketers have found a place in an anti-doping panel of India's National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA). 
      • India's Commonwealth gold-winning weightlifter Kunjarani Devi, who has been suspended for doping previously, has also been included in the panel.
