International Current Affairs
  • Today (1st Friday of October) is World Smile Day.
    • The idea of World Smile Day was coined and initiated by Harvey Ball, a commercial artist from Worcester, Massachusetts. 
    • Note : Harvey Ball is the creator of Smiley Face in 1963.
  • A US House of Representatives' panel has approved a legislation to provide $10 billion (₹65,000 crore) for the construction of President Donald Trump's wall along the US-Mexico border.
  • First Edition of ASEAN India Music Festival started today at Purana Qila, New Delhi.
    • The 3 day festival is being organised by External Affairs Ministry in collaboration with Culture Ministry to celebrate the 25th year anniversary of ASEAN-India Dialogue Relations.
    • Aim of this festival : To boost cultural influences among the peoples of the ASEAN member states and India
  • At the invitation of the Prime Minister Modi, the President of the European Council, Mr. Donald Franciszek Tusk and the President of the European Commission, Mr. Jean-Claude Juncker are on a ‘working’ visit to New Delhi from 5- 7 October, 2017 to hold the 14th India-EU Summit today.
    • They are accompanied by a high-level delegation including EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, Mrs. Federica Mogherini.
    • Note : The 13th summit was held in Brussels in March 30 last year.
MOUs & Agreements
  • President Ram Nath Kovind and his Ethiopian counterpart Mulatu Teshome today signed Two agreements at Addis Ababa in Ethiopia.  They are,
    • Trade Agreement
    • Agreement in field of Information, Communication and Media.
  • Government has signed a Finance Contract with European Investment Bank (EIB) for lending of €300 million for Bangalore Metro Rail Project Phase II Line R6.
    • Note : The Phase II of metro project is jointly financed by EIB (€500 million) and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (€300 million). 
National Current Affairs
  • The Odisha government has decided to exempt fees for differently-abled students in government and government-aided institutions to encourage them for higher education.
  • The Delhi government has directed all schools in the national capital to ban the "entry or stay" of outsiders on their campuses to ensure the safety of students. 
  • Indian Air Force's first three women fighter pilots are set to be commissioned by the end of this year, Indian Air Force chief BS Dhanoa announced today. 
    • The second batch of three more women pilots are now being trained, he added. 
    • Flight Cadets Bhawana Kanth, Avani Chaturvedi and Mohana Singh will fly fighter jets like the Sukhoi and Tejas.
Awards & Honors
  • The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) has been awarded the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize for its "work to draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons". 
  • Bengaluru journalist Gauri Lankesh, who was murdered recently, has become the first Indian journalist to win annual Anna Politkovskaya Award
    • Lankesh shared the award given in the memory of a slain Russian journalist and political activist with 31-year-old Pakistani peace activist Gulalai Ismail
Books & Authors
  • Indian women's cricket team captain Mithali Raj is writing her autobiography, which will release in 2018. 
    • Raj, who became the all-time highest run-scorer in women's ODIs in July this year, was named in BBC's 100 most influential women list in September.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The government has made Aadhaar mandatory for all post office deposits, PPF, the National Savings Certificate scheme, and Kisan Vikas Patra deposits
    • Existing depositors have been given time till December 31, to provide the 12-digit unique identification number. 
    • Further, the depositor should submit proof of application of enrolment for Aadhaar where the number has not been assigned.
  • The World Bank has supported GST implementation in India claiming that it will have a 'hugely positive impact' on the country's economy.
New Appointments
  • Banwarilal Purohit was sworn in as 25th Governor of Tamil Nadu
    • He took charge from C Vidyasagar Rao, Governor of Maharashtra who was hold additional charge after  tenure of K. Rosaiah had ended on 31 August 2016.
Sports Current Affairs
  • The FIFA U-17 World Cup has kicked off today. 
    • Important Note : This is the first-ever FIFA tournament to be hosted in India
    • The tournament is in its 17th edition, with defending champions Nigeria not playing since they were unable to qualify.
  • India has finished second in the recently-concluded 20th Asia Masters Athletics Championships in Rugao.
