International Current Affairs
  • The Lahaul & Spiti district (Himachal Pradesh) has been named among the Top 10 regions to visit next year by Lonely Planet in its 'Best in Travel 2018' list. 
    • The list has been topped by Belfast and the Causeway coast in Northern Ireland, followed by United States' Alaska and Slovenia's Julian Alps.
  • The United States will no longer approve the extension of non-immigrant visas such as H-1B and L1 by default. 
    • Earlier, if a person was once found to be eligible for a work visa initially, they would usually be considered for extension of their visa. 
National Current Affairs
  • Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today announced that the government will celebrate 'Anti-Black Money Day' on November 8th to mark one year since the demonetisation announcement
    • This comes a day after the Opposition announced a 'Black Day' to mark the first anniversary of note ban.
  • The deadline to link Aadhaar card to avail benefits of welfare schemes has been extended to March 31, 2018.
  • The Chandigarh administration has approved a provision for the Transgender community in the city to use a gender-neutral title 'Mx' in all forms and applications. 
  • As many as 51 Pakistani Hindu migrant families that had been living in Chhattisgarh's Raipur for several years were granted Indian citizenship on Wednesday. 
    • Withthis, Chhattisgarh has become the first state to award citizenship after PM Narendra Modi entitled the state governments with this right in 2015. 
    • Important Note : Earlier, only the Union government had the power to grant citizenships.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • The Union Government has announced Bank Recapitalisation Plan to infuse Rs. 2.11 lakh crore ( $32.4 billion) capital over next two years into Public Sector Banks (PSBs) and prioritised financing support for MSMEs in 50 clusters. 
    • The capital infusion will be accompanied by a series of banking sector reforms that will be revealed in the coming months.
  • Shares of Punjab National Bank (PNB) gained nearly 50% today after the government announced a ₹2.11 lakh crore capital infusion plan for public sector banks. 
    • PNB was the biggest gainer among the banking stocks and its shares hit their 52-week high.
    • Further, SBI gained around 26% adding ₹60,000 crore in market value, and Canara Bank surged nearly 40%.
  • Asia now has the most billionaires in the world, surpassing the US for the first time.
    • The number of billionaires in Asia rose by 117 to 637, whereas the US added 25 billionaires for a total of 563 in 2016. 
  • E-commerce major eBay has acquired a 5.4% stake in Flipkart.
    • The acquisition follows the sale of eBay India business to Flipkart for $211 million, which was completed in August. Earlier this year, eBay also invested $500 million into the Indian e-commerce startup.
  • Ministries of Power and Textiles have joined hands under SAATHI (Sustainable and Accelerated Adoption of efficient Textile technologies to Help small Industries) initiative.
    • Under this initiative, Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a PSU under Ministry of Power, will procure energy efficient powerlooms, motors and rapier kits in bulk and provide them to small and medium Powerloom units at no upfront cost.
Deaths
  • Gutkha baron and Chairman of Manikchand Group Rasiklal Manikchand Dhariwal (78) passed away today.
  • American rock and roll legend Fats Domino (89), who sold more than 65 million records, passed away today.
    • Domino is believed to have inspired several artists, including Elvis Presley and The Beatles
    • He was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1986 and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame later.
MOUs & Agreements
  • The State Bank of India (SBI) signed agreement with Escorts Ltd, a leading tractor and construction equipment manufacturer based at Faridabad, Haryana, to finance farmers for purchase of Escorts tractors. 
    • The aim of the tie-up with Escorts is to promote, market and make accessible, organised finance facility, with superior features at competitive interest rates to farmers across country, who wish to purchase Powertrac and Farmtrac tractors manufactured by Escorts. 
  • The Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC) of India inked Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Punjab National Bank (PNB) to provide easy access to export finance for SMEs and merchant exporters of council.
    • As per the agreement, PNB will provide finance with assurance that loans up to Rs 10 crore would be provided within six to seven weeks at competitive rates, PNB will also extend foreign currency loan facilities and provide advisory support to EEPC India members to finance projects through its more than 200 authorised foreign exchange branches.
  • The Union Government has inked $300 million loan agreement with Asian Development Bank for Second West Bengal Development Finance Program.
Science & Technology
  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has begun preparation for its second lunar mission, Chandrayaan-2, in March next year, nearly a decade after its first mission.

  • Russia is preparing to test its 100-tonne intercontinental ballistic missile, codenamed 'Satan 2', which is capable of destroying the whole of UK or France.
    • The missile can deliver about a dozen 40-megaton nuclear warheads which will be 2,000 times more powerful than the atom bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.
New Appointments
  • New Zealand today swore in Jacinda Ardern (37) as the country's 3rd Woman and the youngest Prime Minister in 150 years.
