  • Credit rating - financial information about someone that a bank or shop uses for deciding whether to lend them money or to give them credit
  • Propose - to suggest a plan, idea, or action
  • Tighten the screws - to put more pressure on someone to do something
  • Regulator - a person or organization whose job is to be certain that companies, systems etc act fairly and follow rules
  • Feedback - comments about how well or how badly someone is doing something, which are intended to help them do it better
  • Enhance - to improve something, or to make it more attractive or more valuable
  • Accountability - a situation in which people know who is responsible for something and can ask them to explain its state or quality
  • Provision - a part of an agreement or law that deals with a particular problem
  • Mandate - an official order to do something
  • Disclosure - the process of giving information to people, especially information that was secret
  • Investor - a person who puts money into something in order to make a profit or get an advantage
  • Spin-off -  to create something new based on something else that already exists
  • Non-core - a non-core activity, business, etc. is one that a company does not really need or consider the most important
  • Spelt out - to say or explain something very clearly because someone has not understood something
  • Predominant - most important or powerful
  • Apart from - except for someone or something
  • Resorting to - to do something extreme or unpleasant in order to solve a problem
  • Collusion - the secret activities of people who work together to do something dishonest
  • In line with - similar to someone or something
  • Crackdown - strong action that someone in authority takes to stop a particular activity
  • Default - to fail to do something, such as pay a debt, that you legally have to do
  • Substantial - large in amount or degree
  • Impact - an effect, or an influence
  • Prima facie - based on what seems to be true, before a situation has been examined in detail
  • Address - to give attention to or deal with a matter or problem
  • Plague - harmful
  • Allow room for - the possibility for something to exist or happen
  • Considerable - large in size, amount, or degree
  • Prudential - careful and avoiding risks
  • Criticism - comments that show that you think something is wrong or bad
  • Reputational - relating to the opinion that people in general have about someone or something
  • Peril - danger
  • Crises -  urgent, difficult, or dangerous situations
  • Oligopolistic - a situation in which a small number of organizations or companies has control of an area of business, so that others have no share
  • Incumbent - someone who has an official position
  • Creditor - a person or company that is owed money by another person or company
  • Borrower - someone who borrows money from a bank
  • Catalan - a language that people speak in parts of the north-east of Spain
  • Secession - the act of leaving an organization or government, esp. the decision of a state to separate from the government
  • Referendum - an occasion when everyone in a country can vote to make a decision about one particular subject
  • Calibrate -  to check something to see if it is accurate
  • Long-standing - having existed for a long time
  • Conflict - angry disagreement between people or groups
  • Escalate - to become much worse or more serious, or to make something do this
  • Full-blown - in its most complete and developed form
  • Crisis -  an urgent, difficult, or dangerous situation
  • Legislature - the part of government that makes and changes laws
  • Consistent with - containing statements or ideas that are similar or that have the same aim
  • Mandate - the authority of an elected government or official to do the things that they promised to do before an election
  • Self-determination - the freedom of the people in a country to choose their own government and not be controlled by another country
  • Turnout - the number of voters in an election
  • In turn - as a result of something that is part of a connected series of events
  • Cautioned - warned
  • Plebiscite - a vote by everyone in a country about a very important issue
  • Unconstitutional - not allowed or not legal according to the constitution (=set of official rules or principles) of a particular country or organization
  • Swiftly - quickly
  • Confrontation - a situation in which people or groups are arguing angrily or are fighting
  • Imminent - likely or certain to happen very soon
  • Outcome -  the final result of a process, meeting, activity etc
  • Conservative -  not willing to accept much change, especially in the traditional values of society
  • Invoke -  to use a law or rule in order to achieve something
  • Confer - to give something such as authority, a legal right, or an honour to someone
  • Province - one of many areas into which some countries are divided
  • Awkward - difficult to deal with and embarrassing
  • Dire - very severe or serious
  • Consequence - a result or effect of something
  • Expenditure - money spent by a government, organization, or person
  • Separatist - a member of a group of people who want to be independent of a national, religious, or other group to which they belong
  • Hardline - strict or extreme in your beliefs or opinions, and not willing to change them
  • Stance - an attitude or view about an issue that you state clearly
  • Defiant - refusing to obey a person or rule
  • Consolidation - the action or process of making something stronger or more solid
  • Reportedly - used for showing that you are not certain that something you are reporting is true
  • Invalidate -  to make something such as a document, contract, or process no longer legally effective
  • Prospect - the possibility that something will happen
  • Implication - a possible effect or result
  • Conversely - used for introducing a sentence, or part of a sentence, which says something that is the opposite of the other part
  • Confiscation - the action of taking or seizing something with authority
  • Ballot box - a box in which you put your ballot paper after you have voted
  • Undoubtedly - used for saying that something is certainly true or is accepted by everyone
  • Secessionist - favouring formal withdrawal from membership of a federation or body, especially a political state
  • Carte blanche - the freedom to do what you want in a particular situation
  • Embarrassment - a feeling of being nervous or ashamed because of what people know or think about you
  • Overt - not hidden or secret
  • Obstruction - to prevent something from happening
  • Scenario - a situation that could possibly happen
  • Affluent - having a lot of money or owning a lot of things
  • Overturn - to say officially that something such as a decision or law is wrong and change it
  • Statute - a law passed by a government and formally written down
  • Autonomy - a situation in which a state, region, or organization is independent and has the power to govern itself
  • Apportion -  to divide something
  • Austerity -  an economic policy by which a government reduces the amount of money it spends by a large amount
  • Eurozone - the group of European Union states that use the euro as their official currency
  • Tap into - to understand and express something such as people’s beliefs or attitudes
  • Conciliatory - trying to end an argument and make people feel less angry
  • Imperative - extremely important and urgent
  • Upsurge - a sudden increase in something
  • Separatism - the practice of separation of a certain group of people from a larger body on the basis of ethnicity, religion, or gender
