International Current Affairs
  • India is going to conduct 1st BIMSTEC Disaster Management Exercise 2017 (BIMSTEC DMEx-2017)  at New Delhi from 10th to 13th October 2017. 
    • This exercise will be a platform for sharing best practices on all aspects of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), strengthening regional response and coordination for disaster management among the BIMSTEC member countries.
    • Note : At the 17th BIMSTEC Senior Officials Meeting held in Kathmandu, Nepal on February 7, it was decided that India would organise the first annual Disaster Management Exercise for the region. 
    • BIMSTEC - Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation
  • The United States today opened its 1st permanent military base in the middle of the Negev desert, Israel.
    • The base will host the US troops and systems to identify and intercept various aerial threats. 
  • Russia and China today began the 2nd stage of the Joint Sea-2017 naval drills in waters near the Korean Peninsula
    • This comes amid increased tensions in the Korean Peninsula over North Korea's nuclear weapons programme.
National Current Affairs
  • The Union Cabinet has given its approval for the Merger and Modernization plan of 17 Government of India Presses (GIPs) into 5 GIPs.
    • Note : The five GIPs are located at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Minto Road and Mayapuri in New Delhi;  Nashik (Maharashtra) and Temple Street (Kolkata, West Bengal).

  • A 30-foot-high statue of Mikhail Kalashnikov (inventor of the AK-47 assault rifle), was unveiled in Moscow.
Banking, Business & Economic Affairs
  • 3 Indians have featured on Forbes' list of the 100 Greatest Living Business Minds
    • They are :
      • Ratan Tata (Former chairman of Tata Sons)
      • Lakshmi Mittal (CEO and Chairman of the world's largest steel-making company ArcelorMittal)
      • Vinod Khosla (Founder of venture capital firm Khosla Ventures).
  • India today announced an emergency aid of over ₹1.2 crore ($200,000) for the Caribbean countries worst affected by recent hurricanes.
  • Norway's sovereign wealth fund, the largest in the world, has hit $1 trillion for the first time. 
    • Norway's central bank which maintains the fund has announced that strong equity markets in 2017 and a weaker US dollar were responsible for the milestone. 
  • Switzerland's financial regulator Financial Market Supervisory Authority has closed down the unauthorised providers of the fake cryptocurrency "E-Coin". 
    • The developers of E-Coin had accepted about $4.2 million in public deposits without holding the required banking licence. 
  • Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu today released commemorative coins of Rs 100 and Rs 10 denomination on the occasion of 101st Birth Centenary of noted Carnatic musician Dr. MS Subbulakshmi

  • A personally signed copy of Hitler's autobiography 'Mein Kampf' has been auctioned in the US for over ₹8 lakh
    • The book is signed by Hitler as "Only in battle will the noble man survive! Adolf Hitler on 18/August 1930". 
Deaths
  • Former Karnataka Minister and senior Congress leader Qamarul Islam (69) passed away.
    • The six-time MLA had held several portfolios including Housing, Labour, Municipal Administration, Public Enterprise, and Minority Development. 
    • He had been appointed as the Kerala Secretary-in-charge of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in July this year.
Sports Current Affairs
  • The Board Of Control For Cricket In India (BCCI) today nominated former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni for the country's third highest civilian award, the Padma Bhushan, for his contribution to the game. 
    • Important Points to Note
      • Dhoni is the board's only nomination for the award this year. 
      • Cricketers Kapil Dev, Sunil Gavaskar, Rahul Dravid and Lala Amarnath were already honored with this award.
  • India's middle-distance runners PU Chitra and G Lakshmanan bagged Gold medals at the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Turkmenistan today.
