RBI to issue new Rs 50 notes soon : Highlights

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) today announced that it is going to issue new Rs. 50/- denomination notes soon. The RBI said it will issue these Rs 50 denomination banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi (new) series. The base colour of the note is Fluorescent blue. They will have the motif of 'Hampi with Chariot' on reverse, depicting the country's cultural heritage.

The note has other designs, geometric patterns aligning with the overall colour scheme, both at the obverse and reverse. Dimension of the banknote will be 66 mm x 135 mm

These notes will bear the signature of RBI governor Urjit Patel. RBI had said in December last year that it would issue new currency notes of Rs 50 and Rs 20.

Front Side

  • Ashoka Pillar emblem on the right,
  • Denominational numeral ५० in Devnagari,
  • Guarantee Clause, Governor’s signature with Promise Clause and RBI emblem towards right of Mahatma Gandhi portrait,
  • Mahatma Gandhi portrait and electrotype (50) watermarks,
  • Micro letters ‘RBI’, ‘भारत’, ‘INDIA’ and ‘50’,
  • Number panel with numerals growing from small to big on the top left side and bottom right side,
  • Portrait of Mahatma Gandhi at the centre,
  • See through register with denominational numeral 50,
  • Windowed demetalised security thread with inscriptions ‘भारत’ and RBI.

Back Side

  • Denominational numeral ५० in Devnagari,
  • Language panel,
  • Motif of Hampi with Chariot,
  • Swachh Bharat logo with slogan,
  • Year of printing of the note on the left.
All the Rs 50 banknotes issued by RBI in the earlier series will continue to be legal tender.

RBI is also going to introduce new Rs. 200 notes in the coming months to ease pressure on lower-denomination currencies that are in short supply. The printing of which had already begun.
