Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "The NOTA principle: On Rajya Sabha polls"
  • Protest - a strong complaint or disagreement
  • Electorate - all the people who are allowed to vote
  • Ballot paper - a piece of paper that you write your vote on
  • Provision - a part of an agreement or law that deals with a particular problem
  • Proportional - correct or suitable in size, amount, or degree when considered in relation to something else
  • Render - to make someone or something be or become something
  • Ineffective - something that is ineffective does not work correctly or does not do what you want it to do
  • Whip - an official order to members of a political party to go to a particular debate and vote
  • Defection - the act of leaving a country, political party, etc. to go to another one
  • Defiant - refusing to obey a person or rule
  • Pertain to something - to be directly related to something
  • Mopping up - to win, or succeed in doing something
  • Nominee - someone who has been officially suggested for a job or a prize
  • Concern - a feeling of worry about something, especially one that a lot of people have about an important issue
  • Flock - a large group of people
  • Meekly - in a quiet, gentle manner
  • Democratisation - the action of making something accessible to everyone
  • Reform - a change that is intended to correct a situation that is wrong or unfair, or make a system work more effectively

  • Subsidy - an amount of money that the government or another organization pays to help to reduce the cost of a product or service
  • Sustainably - in a way that can be maintained at a certain rate or level

  • Eased - to make a problem, bad situation, or pain less severe
  • Incurred - to experience something unpleasant as a result of something that you have done
  • Substantially - by a large amount or degree
  • Abolition - the official end to a law, system, practice etc
  • Adversely - in a way that prevents development harmfully
  • Foremost - most important
  • In the long run - not immediately but at some time in the future
  • Deregulating - to remove national or local government controls or rules from a business or other activity
  • Widespread - happening or existing in many places, or affecting many people
