  • Stand-off - a disagreement or fight in which neither opponent can do anything to win or achieve their aim
  • Diplomacy -  the profession or skill of preserving or creating friendly relationships between countries
  • Paid off - if something that you do pays off, it brings you some benefit
  • Prevailed over -  to defeat
  • Rhetoric - a style of speaking or writing that is intended to influence people
  • Expeditious - quick and effective
  • Disengagement - the action or process of withdrawing from involvement in an activity, situation, or group
  • Disputed - a disputed area is one that different countries claim belongs to them, so that there is a disagreement or war between them
  • Plateau - a large flat area of land that is higher than the land around it
  • Troops - soldiers, especially in large numbers
  • Patrol - a group of people or vehicles that move around a place in order to prevent trouble or crime
  • Domestic - relating to the country being talked about
  • Negotiation - formal discussions in which people or groups try to reach an agreement, especially in a business or political situation
  • Constraint - something that limits your freedom to do what you want
  • Inconsistent - containing parts that do not match each other
  • Agreed to disagree - to accept that someone else does not have the same opinion as you and agree not to argue about it any more
  • Escalate - to become much worse or more serious, or to make something do this
  • Full-blown - in its most complete and developed form
  • Conflict - angry disagreement between people or groups
  • Crisis -  an urgent, difficult, or dangerous situation
  • Bilateral - involving two groups or countries
  • Summit - an important formal meeting between leaders of governments from two or more countries
  • Diplomat - an official whose job is to represent one country in another
  • Rupture -  an end to a friendly relationship or to a peaceful situation
  • Pilgrim - someone who travels to a holy place that is important in their religion
  • Swiftly - quickly
  • Semblance of something - a situation in which something only appears in a small amount
  • Accord - a formal agreement between countries or groups
  • Revert to something - to return to a previous state or way of behaving, often one that is not good
  • Tension - the feeling caused by a lack of trust between people, groups, or countries who do not agree about something and may attack each other
  • Neighbour - a country that is next to another country
  • Hotly - involving people who are competing very hard with one another
  • By-election - an election in one particular area to choose a new representative in parliament or on a council, or to replace someone who has died or left the job
  • Stake - the degree to which you are involved in something and want it to succeed
  • Contestant - someone who takes part in a contest
  • Verdict - an opinion that you have or a decision that you make
  • Predictable -  if something is predictable, it happens in the way that you would expect
  • Evidently - easily seen or understood
  • Breathing space - a period of rest from a difficult activity that allows you to get your energy back or try a different solution
  • Comeback - a period when someone or something becomes successful or popular again
  • Reconcile - to make someone accept a situation even though they do not like it
  • Setback - a problem that delays or that stops progress or makes a situation worse
  • Nurse - to feel a strong emotion or have a belief for a long time
  • Ambition -  something that you very much want to do, usually something that is difficult to achieve
  • Sap - to take away strength or an important quality from someone
  • Enthusiasm - the feeling of being very interested in something or excited by it
  • Keenly - very strongly
  • Raised the stakes - to make a situation more urgent or more difficult to ignore
  • Considerably - a lot
  • Referendum - an occasion when everyone in a country can vote to make a decision about one particular subject
  • Indeed - used for adding a statement that supports and increases the effect of what you have just said
  • Proxy - someone who has the authority to do something for you, especially to vote
  • Erode - to gradually reduce the strength or importance of something
  • Stronghold - a place where the majority of people have the same political or religious beliefs
  • Defection - to leave a country, political party, etc., especially in order to join an opposing one
  • Incitement - something that encourages people to be violent or commit crimes, or the deliberate act of encouraging violence or crime
  • Intervene - to become involved in a situation in order to try to stop or change it
  • Violation - an action that is in opposition to a law, agreement, principle etc
  • Deploying - to use something
  • Constituency - the voters in a division of a country who elect a representative to parliament
  • Interpret - to understand an action, situation etc in a particular way
  • Agenda - a plan or aim that is kept secret
  • Distracted - not able to concentrate on something
  • Vitriol - very severe and cruel criticism
  • Rival - a person, team, or business that competes with another
