  • Escalation - to become much worse or more serious
  • Expulsion -  an occasion when someone is officially forced to leave an organization or activity permanently because of their bad behaviour
  • Retaliatory - intended to do something harmful or unpleasant to someone because they have done something harmful or unpleasant to you
  • Spiral - a situation that gets worse and worse
  • Diplomatic - relating to the profession or skill of preserving or creating friendly relationships between countries
  • Superpower - a country that has great military, economic, and political power
  • Senate -  the more senior part of a law-making institution
  • Sanction - an official order to stop communication, trade, etc with a country that has broken international law
  • Ally - a country that makes an agreement with another country that they will work together to help each other, especially in a war
  • Unprecedented - never having happened or existed before
  • Comparable - fairly similar to another thing
  • Shutdown - an occasion when a business or large piece of equipment stops operating
  • Losing heart - to stop believing that you can succeed
  • Expel - to officially force someone to leave a place or organization because of their bad behaviour
  • Diplomat -  an official whose job is to represent their government in a foreign country
  • Last leg - near to end
  • Alleged - claimed to be true, even though this has not been proved
  • Interference - the process of deliberately becoming involved in a situation and trying to influence the way that it develops, although you have no right to do this
  • Retaliate - to do something harmful or unpleasant to someone because they have done something harmful or unpleasant to you
  • Apparently - based only on what you have heard, not on what you are certain is true
  • Campaign - a series of actions intended to produce political or social change
  • Despite - used for saying that something happens even though something else might have prevented it
  • Overture - a suggestion or offer that you make to someone
  • Take a hard-line - to deal with someone or something in a very firm or strict way and refuse to change your opinion or decision
  • Commodity -  something that can be bought and sold, especially a basic food product or fuel
  • Meltdown - a sudden and complete failure of a company, organization, or system
  • Counter -  an action that you take in order to oppose or stop something or reduce its negative effect
  • Slim - very small
  • Elsewhere - in or to another place or other places
  • War-ravaged - destroyed by war
  • Ceasefire - an agreement to stop fighting for a period of time, especially in order to discuss permanent peace
  • Regime - a system or form of government
  • Rebel - someone who tries to remove a government or leader using force
  • Sustainable - capable of continuing for a long time at the same level
  • Crisis - an urgent, difficult, or dangerous situation
  • Reportedly - used for showing that you are not certain that something you are reporting is true
  • Irrational - done or happening without clear or sensible reasons
  • Mutual - belonging to or true of two or more people
  • Hostility - opposition to something
  • Protocol - a set of rules for the correct way to behave on formal occasions
  • Ravage - to destroy something or damage it very badly
  • Displacing -  to force someone to leave their own country and live somewhere else
  • Massive - very large or heavy
  • Destructive - causing severe damage or harm
  • Deluge - a very heavy fall of rain
  • Subcontinent - the part of Asia that contains the countries of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh
  • Variability - the fact that something changes often or is not always the same
  • Moreover - used for introducing an additional and important fact that supports or emphasizes what you have just said
  • Drought - a long period of time when there is little or no rain and crops die
  • Prone - likely to be affected by something, especially something bad
  • Rehabilitation - the process of returning something to a good condition
  • Alleviating - to make something less painful, severe, or serious
  • Normality - a situation in which everything is normal
  • Next of kin - your closest relative
  • Elderly - old people
  • Aggravated - to make a bad situation worse
  • Impact - an effect, or an influence
  • Calamity - an event that causes serious damage, or causes a lot of people to suffer, for example a flood or fire
  • Dismaying - to make someone very worried, disappointed, or sad
  • Wrangle - to argue about something for a long time, especially in an angry and unpleasant way
  • Unseemly - unseemly behaviour is embarrassing or upsets people because it is not suitable in a particular situation
  • Catastrophic - causing a lot of damage, or making a lot of people suffer
  • Necessitate - to make something necessary
  • Apparently - based only on what you have heard, not on what you are certain is true
  • Inundate -  to cover an area of land with water
  • Hotspot - a place where war or other fighting is likely to happen
  • Mitigate -  to reduce the harmful effects of something
  • Legitimately - in a way that conforms to the law or to rules
  • Marginal - very small
  • Calamitous - causing serious damage, or causing a lot of people to suffer
  • Take something in your stride -  to not be upset or troubled by something
  • Traumatic - a traumatic experience or event makes you feel very upset, afraid, or shocked
  • Disorder - an illness or medical condition
  • Catastrophe - an event that causes a lot of damage or makes a lot of people suffer
  • vigorous - strong, active, and healthy
  • Consequence - a result of a particular action or situation, often one that is bad or not convenient
