  • Clean-up - the process of removing pollution or waste from a place
  • Sanitation - conditions and processes relating to people’s health, especially the systems that supply water and deal with human waste
  • Investment - the process of spending money in order to improve something or make it more successful
  • High-profile - attracting a lot of attention and interest from the public and newspapers, television, etc
  • Subsidy - an amount of money that the government or another organization pays to help to reduce the cost of a product or service
  • Outcome - the final result of a process, meeting, activity etc
  • Rigorous - thorough and careful
  • Fare - to succeed
  • Lapsed into something - to start speaking or behaving in a less active or acceptable way
  • Disuse - the condition of not being used (any longer)
  • Rural - relating to the countryside
  • Deficit - the total amount by which money spent is more than money received
  • Assessment - the act of judging or deciding the amount, value, quality, or importance of something, or the judgment or decision that is made
  • Exceed - to go above an official limit
  • Substantial - large in size, value, or importance
  • Persuade - to make someone agree to do something by giving them reasons why they should
  • Elusive - difficult or impossible to achieve
  • Comprehensive - complete and easily achieved
  • Affluent - used about a place where people have a lot of money
  • Sewage - waste matter from houses
  • Segregation - to keep one thing separate from another
  • Compost - a mixture of decaying plants and vegetables that is added to soil to improve its quality
  • Landfill - a large hole in the ground where waste from people’s homes or from industry is buried
  • Pernicious - very dangerous or harmful
  • Campaign - to try to achieve political or social change by persuading other people or the government to do something
  • Controversy - a disagreement, especially about a public policy or a moral issue that a lot of people have strong feelings about
  • Campaign - a series of actions intended to produce political or social change
  • Protracted - continuing for a long time, especially longer than is normal or necessary
  • Fierce - involving very strong feelings such as determination, anger, or hate
  • Contestation - the act of arguing or disagreeing about something
  • Trailing - to be losing to your competitor in a competition
  • Alliance - an arrangement between two or more people, groups, or countries by which they agree to work together to achieve something
  • Disputed - a disputed fact, statement, or judgment is one that many people argue about
  • Incumbent - someone who has an official position
  • Former - used for describing someone or something that had a particular job, title, status etc in the past, but not now
  • Tabulation - a way of processing information or data by putting it in a table
  • Variance - differences between two or more similar things
  • Alleging - to say that something is true or that someone has done something wrong or illegal, even though this has not been proved
  • Insisting - to say very firmly that something must happen or must be done
  • Overhaul - to take apart and repair a machine in order to make it work better
  • Linger - to last or continue for a long time
  • For instance - for example
  • Grist to the mill - something that can be used for achieving an aim
  • Exude - if you exude a particular quality, people notice easily that you have a lot of it
  • Cautious - careful to avoid problems or danger
  • Optimism - a tendency to be hopeful and to expect that good things will probably happen
  • Reshuffle - the process of changing the jobs or responsibilities of the people in a particular group or organization
  • Concern - a feeling of worry about something
  • Condemnation - a public statement in which someone criticizes someone or something severely
  • Marred - to spoil something
  • Dispute - an argument or disagreement
  • Pre-requisite - something that must exist or happen before something else is possible
  • Reform - a change that is intended to correct a situation that is wrong or unfair, or make a system work more effectively
  • Violation - an action that is in opposition to a law, agreement, principle etc
  • Deteriorate - to become worse
  • Bloodshed - a situation in which people are killed or injured, especially during fighting
